The New Megaupload BIGGER. BETTER. FASTER. STRONGER. SAFER. mega.co.nz

  1. Internet millionaire Kim Dotcom says his new and improved file storage site Mega.co.nz could not have been made without the "fresh start" he got after New Zealand and United States authorities raided his Auckland home and shut down his former business.
After a successful site launch early this morning, exactly a year after his arrest on copyright piracy and racketeering charges, Dotcom said it was his goal to list the company on the New Zealand stock exchange.
Early this morning Dotcom tweeted that the site had achieved 250,000 registrations and the servers were overloading but still functional.
Dotcom has just hosted a media session at his Auckland mansion where preparations are underway for a launch party this evening, and said plenty about his battle with the authorities over copyright issues with his former site Megaupload.com.
However, he said his new site, which encrypts users' files "on the fly" as they are uploaded to Mega's cloud storage network for improved privacy, would not have been developed if he had not been arrested exactly one year ago.
"It wouldn't have even been possible to do this. No one else who is currently in business in the file storage arena can just update their site and be like us, you have to start from scratch
"From that perspective this fresh start for Mega is a good thing."
The arrest meant his site was shutdown and many of his assets frozen, but it has not precluded him from renewing work on products which push the boundaries of file-sharing and content ownership rights.
Dotcom said he was worried the closure of Megaupload.com might scare people off his newest venture but the amount of traffic to the site had surpassed his expectations.
The German-born millionaire, famous for his love of fast cars, said his long term plan was to list the company on the NZX.
He was keen to stay in New Zealand if extradition proceedings lodged by the United States government did not succeed, but said that would depend on whether the New Zealand government was willing to leave him in peace.
"My biggest fear is if we succeed [in fighting extradition] will there be an end - will that be enough [for them] to say, 'OK we made a mistake, leave this guy alone' or will the people in government and the senior people in law enforcement take this defeat and be bitter about it and try and find something else [on me]?"
He also said the single fibre cable carrying internet traffic in and out of New Zealand was choking business development in the country and he wanted to work with the backers of failed company Pacific Fibre to break the Southern Cross cable's monopoly.
"At the moment there's a giant wall shielding New Zealand saying, 'Go away, internet businesses don't come here, we don't have cheap connectivity we don't have good connectivity and we are raiding IT companies', and that's of course bad for New Zealand."
Dotcom talked for almost an hour on several topics including the conspiratorial nature of the existing charges against him and how he intended to take internet advertising to a new level with a yet-to-launch product called MegaKey.

A stage has been erected at Dotcom's multi-million dollar mansion in Coatesville and a huge "Mega" sign adorns the hillside near the entry gate.

Given that even with a paid account files are limited to 1TB Bandwidth, or a max of 8TB. Anything large like an 8gb game or HD movie is soon going to hit its limits once a few 100 people start downloading it.

I think it will end up been more like Dropbox, sure people will use it for sharing dodgy stuff however it will be very limited compared to MegaUpload.

I presume the limits are per month, so i imagine the limits would reset at the end of each month allowing that file to be downloaded again, presuming the person hosting it renews the Mega account its hosted on.

Nope i personally didn't watch the press conference before, just seen a little clip from it on TV.

That's a list of different mobile web browsers the site will render differently for.
