Like many web users, I made the move from Internet Explorer to Firefox many years ago in the hunt for a more standard and secure web browser. Since then, Microsoft has put a lot of effort into improving Internet Explorer with version 7 and the soon to be released version 8, as well as Mozilla bringing out FireFox 3. Until now the choice for a Windows user was basically Firefox 3 or Internet Explorer 7.

Then comes along Google releasing a whole new web browser based on Apple's Webkit Browser Engine. It would seem rather unexpected and suprising, considering how Google finances the Mozilla Foundation that they now are going into competetion.

There are some benefits to using Chrome, the Apple Webkit engine it uses is one of the most up to date browser engines, which was the first to pass the Acid3 Test (Though not in a stable build) but the browser is still in its infancy and lacks the solid finish with support for Addons like Firefox and IE offer.

Some may prefer to use Safari on Windows which Apple recently released and forced on iTunes users, though Apple havent quite relised that the Mac theme it uses doesnt fit into Windows making it look really out of place. That also uses the Webkit Engine.

The big question it leaves open is for those FireFox users, are they going to stay loyal and stick to Mozilla with Firefox and the Gecko Engine? Or jump ship and join Google which many believe "Can never do wrong"?

Please tell us about your experience with Chrome, and if its made you switch from your current web browser?

Out of Chrome and Firefox I would choose Firefox, it’s a pretty sold browser which is now on its third major version, I did notice chrome rendered Digiex significantly quicker than Firefox, however in its current state I believe Chrome is still vulnerable to the major carpet-bombing flaw which was patched quite a while ago in later webkit builds.

Also as you say Chrome is in its infancy but once it’s developed more and add-ons are created it will probably persuade quite a lot of Google fans to switch. I would say it’s more of a public preview in its current state, I would like to see what Google has in store for the future releases of Chrome.

I personally don’t use Chrome or Firefox though so no chrome has not made me switch from my main browser.

I love it. Except for the little problems with security and not playing videos it is my favourite so far.

As InsaneNutter said its more of a public pre-view. When add ons etc start coming out for it and the problems are sorted I think chrome will be big.

Well the poll asked what I'm using right now and it was FireFox. As to which one I prefer I'll answer that this weekend when I give Chrome a try ;).

Haven't tried Chrome yet, but I love Firefox. I do like Opera's startpage though, with the channels.

I like chrome. If it was updated and didn't have problems I would easily choose it. Firefox would be the second best for me.

I've been using Chrome since I was notified on it via the link posted here a while ago, and believe it or not, it has been the fastest plus cleanest browsing experience yet. Best 2 things I've found is the 'almost empty' windows header and the 'most visited' startpage.. This will make Internet Explorer my 2nd choice and Firefox my 3rd.

Obviously Internet Explorer isn't great, and Safari is fine but nothing special. I will try out Chrome as soon as they release a Mac version, but I can't right now, so I'm stuck on Firefox. Like a few of you mentioned already, hopefully by the time I can try it they will have ironed out the major bugs and security flaws they've already clocked.

Otherwise, I like how they're making it open source, and as with all things Google, they'll probably release a whole load of optional gadgets which would be really nice optional extras. But does Chrome do anything different / better to Firefox at the moment?
