Default E3: Microsoft announces new Xbox 360 'Slim'

Today at E3, Microsoft announced the new Xbox 360 with a new smaller frame with a new shiny black casing. Aside from the new look, the base model will also have built-in Wi-Fi 802.11N and a 250 GB HDD.

With the brand new Xbox 360 announcement, Microsoft also surprised everyone by saying the new console will begin shipping today in the U.S., and everyone attending the Microsoft E3 press announcement will have it shipped out today. For folks in the UK and Europe the new Xbox will be available on July 16.

    The specifications are as follows:
    • Touch sensitive buttons - turn the Xbox 360 on/off and eject a disc with the swipe of a finger
    • Whisper quiet - all new much quieter Xbox 360
    • Wi-fi - built in 802.11N for fast connection
    • Hard drive - 250GB internal, swappable hard drive for even more storage
    • Kinect ready - Custom Kinect port on the back of the console that directly hooks up to the Kinect sensor
    • USB slots - Five USB ports, three on the back of the console and two in the front
    • AV connections - AV cable, HDMI, optical audio
    • Power supply - smaller and more efficient
    • Internal changes - fan changed from two small fans to one larger fan. Chipset based on 45 nanometer and integrated CPU/GPU. Wi-fi inbuilt

As Neowin reported yesterday, Project Natal was also rebranded to Kinect. Within the advertisement, we wondered if the new Xbox 360 showcased was actually a mockup by a fan, or indeed the new look for the console.

Microsoft announced that the new Xbox 360 will be ultra-quiet. Sadly, the new Xbox 360 will not support a Blu-Ray drive. The new Xbox will have three USB ports on the back, ethernet, aux, component/composition adapter port, HDMI and optical audio out. The aux port is a dedicated Kinect port for the new Xbox 360. The front of the console includes a new location for the eject button, and possibly front USB ports. The next version of the console will still require a power brick, but will be much smaller in comparison to the original.

The new Xbox 360 will sell for the same price as the original Xbox 360 for $299.

No Memory Card support or ability to connect one of the old hard drives (besides for a one of transfer with the transfer kit) makes it impossible to use this like I currently use my Xbox. Regularly I take my profile with me to friends consoles and vice versa and this just stopped that.

Which is exactly why Microsoft came out with the update for USB support. Guess they knew people would be pissed (for quite obvious reasons). I do find it funny that when they make it slimmer then they feel the need to add wifi to it, something that should of been done from the start, as 360 was the only console to not support built in Wi-fi, which is honestly quite pathetic as even the Wii supports Wi-fi that was built in.

I think I'll be trading in my 20GB model and upgrading, at uni the quietness would really be appreciated, as it sounded like an aeroplane taking off with the old one! Also the 250GB is much appreciated, and I think it looks awesome, hopefully they'll have learned from the RRoD problems and it won't happen now. Question - can you now use the HDMI port to connect it to the TV rather than component? I'm guessing so...

Yes! As you can see in the image it has a component port and HDMI port. Some of the regular 360's have a HDMI port these days. Mostly the newer manufactured one's.

I'm properly totally wrong here, so please correct me. But I thought the USB pen drive memory card thingy only worked with the console it was created on, or can you use it in multiple xbox's?

Yes you can transfer your account to the USB drive and play it on your friend's 360. It works fine, I have done it many times. It was meant to replace the memory card and can do exactly the same things.

I might buy this 360 just for online gaming, my old one will stay offline and I'll make sure I jtag or at least flash the disc drive.

I see why now, the added USB support stopped any backlash over this and also made it look like Microsoft care.

To me anyway it is one of the most useful features that has been added to the 360. All my profiles, saves and dlc live on a 16gig USB memory stick then the hard drive is just full of installed games / arcade games.

I think for ease of use the Xfat USB explorer app has surpassed Xplorer360 too, its much nice extracting and dumping content to a USB drive now.
