The day everyone has been waiting for, is finally upon us. KaKaRoTo, famous for his work on the PL3 payload, has released a tool/script that converts a standard v3.55 Sony retail firmware PUP, into a custom version. The custom firmware allows the installation of PKG files, without the need for a jailbreak. Please note, this does not appear to have the necessary patches in place, that are necessary for playing backups. However, that is a very trivial detail, considering the grand spectrum of what KaKaRoTo has achieved.

First CFW working. Grab http://bit.ly/hszcH3, then "./create_cfw.sh PS3UPDAT.355.PUP CFW.PUP". Permanently adds "install pkg files" menu.

If you cant do it then just wait a jiffy for the pre-made .pup file to be released
Kudos to Geohots, kakaroto and the team at fail0verflow for making it possible :)
I see death come swift for sony...

It's pretty crazy how at the start of last year the PS3 was the most secure console on the planet, now it can be hacked by just running an update from a USB stick... I never expected that at all (Y)

Actually you can't with this. This shouldn't even really be considered custom firmware as the only this that was changed was the XML and then the PUP file was remade, I could of even easily done it in 5 minutes. No syscalls are added in this firmware so you can't play backups and the PKG files must be signed in order to install them.

Im actually glad that KaKaRoTo decided not to allow backups to be played, i wouldnt want to see the ps3 fail epicly, like the psp did, homebrew is good but piracy just ruins the console and the devs, this is evident with the psp, nds, x360, wii, and worst effected is pc.

That isn't really all that true. The Wii hasn't lost by any means. The Wii has had massive hardware sales from when it was launched then the people who really wanted it already purchased it. Then when it was cracked the Wii got an even higher boost in sales because it was possible for emulators, backups/piracy.etc. It's rather pointless to put this out as an update because it's practically pointless, doesn't do very much. By him not allowing backups, he is just delaying the inevitable. It will happen sooner or later that much is for sure. I just wish they would we could remove the DRM or rip PS1 games as I won't purchase PS1 games that I already own. I suppose i could disc swap but I would like to keep the life of my Blu-Ray drive in the best shape possible.
