Microsoft has confirmed it will replace Xbox 360 consoles which are not compatible with the imminent Xbox 360 firmware update - scheduled to begin rolling out to consoles tomorrow.
"Following a recent update to our system software, we have become aware of an issue that is preventing a very small number of Xbox 360 owners from playing retail game discs," Microsoft said.
"This issue manifests itself a as a unique 'disc unreadable' or 'disc unsupported' error on the screen. We are also able to detect this issue over Xbox LIVE and are pro-actively reaching out to customers that may be impacted to replace their console."
Xbox 360 users who experience these symptoms should contact MS at xbox.com.
Broken consoles will be replaced with an Xbox 360 S with a 250GB hard drive

Its only some very old 360's that have drives which do not support AP2.5. If his console his console was 60GB Pro from 2009 it will likely be a Lite-On 74850C, 83850C or 93450C, depending when it was manufactured. All do AP 2.5 anyway.

I was thinking about sending them a message as a few of my games don't work now and some now take 20+ seconds to pick up.

looks like kotaku and everywhere went crazy this was actually for the beta participants they said this via twitter

This is related to a previous update, not the upcoming release that has been in beta.

In our household, we have 3 Xboxes running:

1: Xenon, manufactured in 2005, without Opus replacement.
2: Zephyr/Falcon, manufactured in 2007, not sure which mobo exactly because it had a replacement.
3: Jasper, manufactured in 2009 (if I'm correct).

Not sure about the drives for each of them, haven't opened them.

Which of the three do you think has the best chance to become black and shiny? :D

If you are on Xbox LIVE it is said they are able to detect the problem and send you the email.

But remember that there are more disc drive issues around on Xbox 360.

If you get lots of disc unreadables, 'Mixed media disc' messages on games, or scratches on discs, etc. And you are still under warranty, just contact MS to have that fixed up. Unfortunately, they'll not give away new Xbox Slim's for that though. :D
