Some Xbox Live Marketplace limited content available for all

Xbox Live Marketplace was just recently made available on the Xbox Live website. Instead of having to browse, purchase, and queue the content on the Xbox 360 directly, you can find content and queue downloads to your 360 with a few clicks (and spend your points even quicker!) A probable unforeseen bonus for many (which will be fixed soon more than likely) is most people can now receive some limited content!

There are many scenarios where a user could receive a special code for limited content; preorders and limited edition games often come with some extras. When you use these codes on the browser based version of Xbox Live Marketplace, it has been found that it takes you to a publicly available URL to purchase and queue the content! What does this mean for you? At this point, it seems a lot of content that has been recently removed from the marketplace (Left 4 Dead demo, recently removed for those who missed it) are still available, as well as other limited content such as Call of Duty 4 Picture pack, Gold Plated Lancer Assault Rifle for Gears of War 2, Bungie Day '07 content, and more being found as the day progresses. Several downloads were found that cost 99999 points as well (what a deal!) There is a group of people on SlickDeals who are gathering a list of this extra content as it is found.

Now that the new Xbox Dashboard has arrived with the addition of making your own personal Avatar I was wondering how close can you get an avatar to look like Tricia Takanawa from Family Guy. I have had a go myself and have come up with this:

I put it to the Digiex members to better this attempt and create a better Tricia Takanawa using only the Xbox 360's Avatar Creator Program. Please post your attempt and views on my creation.

Dead space review

When man finally does get its arse in gear and decides to start exploring the universe you would hope that the game developers and movie writers will...

When man finally does get its arse in gear and decides to start exploring the universe you would hope that the game developers and movie writers will stop using aliens as the common bad guys in their products. The way that they would have you see it is that the moment we leave our own atmosphere, aliens with guns the size of Belgium, will invade our planet or decide that we make extremely good appetisers.

Dead space is a game that agrees with the above philosophy.

Plot

You, the player, play Isaac Clark. A mechanic sent to discover what happened to the USS Ishimura, a ship sent to colonise a planet in deep space. Upon arrival you suddenly crash and are left stranded on the ship (like you weren’t expecting that).
Also upon arrival you find that as per usual in games like this the ship has been overrun by monsters who seem to view you and the people you arrive with as a viable food source (again, How unexpected). After you are separated from your group it is up to you to fight your way through the ship and follow the orders of your commanding officer who conveniently has found a safe place where he can hide and order you about.

Game play

Dead space plays like resident evil four with its third person over the shoulder gun firing. This works to the players advantage since you get to see more of the stunning (if slightly clichéd) environment. The environment in question is as you would expect, a dark dank grey industrial corridor with blood staining the walls and floors and dodgy lighting, (for once I would like to see a space ship with decent carpets and light fixtures. I mean come on did decorators become extinct in the future or something) this sets the mood for the game perfectly along with the music.

The monsters are also real breath of fresh air since rather than firing at them till they resemble Swiss cheese, like in most games, you have to maim them by taking of their limbs. The array of monsters that you varies from the annoying to the “o god I think I just wet myself” with the one thing they have in common is that they seem to love rushing toward you brandishing a desert fork.

Isaac come equipped with a decent arsenal of weaponry which comes in handy when you are trying to discourage a monster from nibbling on your vital organs. He also comes equipped with a device that will let you slow down fast moving objects such as doors and even enemies. The even equip him with a device that enables you to move heavy objects, the telekinesis module, which bears a mighty resemblance to what the gravity gun does in the half life games. (Is it me or has valve set a president with that gun?) the trade off is that you only have limited ammo and must think about where to hit the enemy and cause the most damage as to conserve your ammo.
The other innovation that dead space boasts of is its use of zero gravity. This is a good addition to the games mechanics and the game uses it well, unlike certain other games (cough--Prey--cough) that boast it.

Controls

If you are a FPS freak like I am then at first dead space will daze and confuse you but the more that you play the more it will start to make sense and become second nature. The only thing that I will complain about is that it seems that the buttons for the telekinesis and time slowdown are not to accessible if you need to get to them in a hurry.

Overall Conclusion

Now you might have read this review and arrived at the conclusion that I do not like this game. This would be a lie. Dead Space is one of my favourite games this year. It is well worth the money that you pay for it and as such is soon going to be part of my game library.
The only thing that I am getting at is that the game is not quite what they were marketing. They were trying to bill this game as a horror movie that you could play and interact with. However for the true horror fans such as my self nothing that you see in this game is anything new and the game therefore relies on the startling tactic, witch to its credit it uses really well. But what I a trying to say is that you can’t market a game as one of the scariest things on the market when it relies on startling you. (I mean I was startled by a mouse in my kitchen the other night. But just because it startled me doesn’t make it the rodent equivalent of John Carpenter or Wes Craven)

The films influences can be seen in both films and other games. Its taken stuff from films such as Alien and Event Horizon. Its gaming influences vary from Bioshock, Resident evil 4 to Prey.

Overall Dead space is your standard survival horror but done in a way that will intrigue even the most hesitant survival horror gamer (such as myself.) the only thing that weighs it down is a few clichéd story points. This said however, it is well worth forking out money for and will be a good addition to anyone’s game collection

Score: 8/10
I don't know if the people who have the leaked version can get it, even if they signed up for it..
Sign up for the preview? You're in!

Instead of adding another 10,000 people to the preview program like we did last week, we've decided to do something a little different: everyone who successfully applied to the preview program (and had a valid console ID) will be getting the New Xbox Experience sometime within the next few hours. That’s right…we’re hooking everyone else up with NXE a bit early. If you signed up and are not prompted, that means you did not enter your console ID properly and you'll have to wait until Wednesday.

Don’t worry, it’s almost here.

Thanks again for your overwhelming interest in the program.

In the Xbox Version of Xbox Media Centre DVR-MS playback worked perfectly in the builds compiled around May 2007, however after that I’m guessing the mplayer.dll was updated as when fast forwarding or skipping through a video it just skipped to the end of the video.

Luckily this can easily be fixed by replacing the mplayer.dll in XBMC/system/players/mplayer/ with the one included in this post.

That’s it, the fix is as simple as that, I can confirm this works perfect on the XBMC for XBOX 8.10 codenamed Atlantis build (T3CH XBMC 2008-11-13 8.10 PROPER)

If you want to help try get this fixed in future builds reply to my topic on the XBMC Forums and to this bug report here, hopefully one of the developers will take note :)
Hello, I am back and have read through your emails and accept that despite missing a leg, that drawing of a spider may indeed be the one I sent you. I realise with hindsight that it is possible you rejected the drawing of a spider due to this obvious limb ommission but did not point it out in an effort to avoid hurting my feelings. As such, I am sending you a revised drawing with the correct number of legs as full payment for any amount outstanding. I trust this will bring the matter to a conclusion.

Living a Digital Existence

Week 5

Here is what will be last week's instalment of living a digital existence, sorry it's a tad late...

Time for a change...

This week see the release of Microsoft’s eagerly anticipated “New Xbox Experience” or NXE. As I’m sure many of you will be aware, the NXE is an update to the Xbox 360 dashboard that allows us to more easily navigate our way throughout the menus, as well as the introduction of avatars.

The official blurb states: “Enter the ultimate social entertainment experience. Connect with your favourite people and enjoy more games and entertainment online than with any other device connected to your TV. Welcome to the New Xbox Experience. Jump in.”

Great stuff.

Now, here’s my problem. I’m sure I’m going to get flamed for this, but does anyone else think that they have just “copied” elements from Sony and Nintendo here? Avatars, or should I say “Mii’s”, are nothing new to us, anyone who has ever used a Wii will know about these, and although Microsoft have expanded on them (e.g. clothes etc.) I still feel it’s a bit of a “rip-off” of Nintendo’s hard work. The new menu, while I’m sure very easy to use, looks a bit like the one Sony use on the PS3. I know I’ve heard InsaneNutter I think say that he doesn’t actually like the PlayStation version, and he thinks the 360 version is better, but I suppose what I’m trying to get at is that I think the ingenuity and creativeness has gone out of the industry. Credit obviously has to go to Microsoft in all of this, after all they realised that people wanted a change, and have created something that people clearly like, and fair play to them, if it ain’t broke, don’t break it. But I’d much rather they produce something new and exciting, and brand new interface or something, that I have never seen before, than reproduce something someone else has made and improve it a bit.

I think that it isn’t even just Microsoft and Sony though. Game developers are just as bad, I mean, how often is it now where a game is created, and you think, “Wow, I haven’t actually played anything like this before!” I’ll tell you, not very often. In fact, there’s probably more chance of the Pope appearing on national television telling everyone he’s shagged Madonna and has had an illegitimate child. Fair enough, there are some great games being produced, Gears f War 2, Halo 3, Dead Space to name just a few, but nothing that completely grips me, and I think, “Damn, that game just kicked my ass”. When I play a game now, I’ll play through th campaign once, complete it, and then will only ever play it again because I want the achievements, or I’m helping someone else do it on co-op, but never because I have loved the story so much. I think the last game to grip me in this way was Halo: Combat Evolved, way back on the original Xbox.

But wait.

Alas, there is a glimmer of hope! And that glimmer of hope is Nintendo. Yes, many may disagree, but I think that Nintendo may just save our beloved industry. They came up with the Wii. Something that I certainly hadn’t seen before, and I can say that playing one is a blast. And I know that many people will disagree, saying that it’s “Just for kids” “It has no decent games” and “The graphics are shit”, but guaranteed, you get four of your mates around, have a few beers, and play Super Smash Bros. Brawl, you will have a blast. It doesn’t need brilliant graphics, it was something new, fresh, and never before seen on the console market. And that people, is what we need. The Wii stands for fun, light heartedness and socialising with your mates. Whereas I think the Xbox and PlayStation are more about serious gaming, with games that don’t vary much and getting greatly frustrated because some n00b just blew you up with a rocket launcher. If Nintendo can keep innovating the way they did with the Wii, and keep becoming more popular, it may spur the other "Big 2" into thinking of some great ideas of their own to pull us into buying their products.

Now before I start getting abuse hurled at me for my comments, I’d like to tell everyone, I am an Xbox 360 fanboy. Anyone who knows me will know this fact, and all I’m trying to get at is that I’m sick and tired of the same old games coming out of the boring machine. So please, make me something new, exciting and fresh!!

As always your views and comments are welcome, and I’m pretty sure this week I’m going to get a few people saying that I’m talking complete and utter shite.

Until next time...

EDIT: I am amazed by NXE. I take back any derogatory comments, even if they did copy the avatar idea :P

Of course there are a number of obstacles in your way forcing you to use your goo to create certain structures so your goo can reach the tube. And this is where the game shines.

The freedom of the structures you can create with the goo is amazing, especially once you get further into the game when different types of goo are introduced, which each have different abilities. The level design is brilliant as in every single level there are some genius obstacles in your path, thus making you use your 'genius' to get past these obstacles. One reason why these structures are so easy to make is because the physics in the game are absolutely spot on and the goo balls bend just how you would expect them too. The physics for each goo ball are different depending on which type you are using and once you unlock some of the more complex types of goo the physics in the game really shine. Another clever part of the gameplay is that not only must you be able to create a structure that can reach the tube, but you also have to do this without using all your goo balls otherwise there will be no balls left to actually enter the tube.

Although the further you get into the game the more difficult the levels get, the levels never feel unfair as if you're clever enough you can always easily work out how to reach the actual tube, actually creating the structure being the difficult part. Still if the game gets too difficult for some, you can go back a move which gives you the ability to fix whatever mistake you made the in the last move you made. The game also gives you the ability to skip a level if you find it too difficult although it limits you to 6 skips for the whole game. There are also signposts (like the one in the picture above) which gives you tips during each stage.

GRAPHICS:
The graphics in the game are absolutely brilliant and shows that 2D
gaming is alive and kicking. Every stage is vibrant and full of colour (although there are some darker stages they are only made dark to suit the mood of the stage) and as each goo has eyes and makes noises its as if every goo ball has their own personality (this becomes more obvious once you unlock different types of goo). The physics in the game are absolutely brilliant, which is what you expect as the whole game is based on the physics, and although you'd expect it to mainly affect the gameplay it also makes the game look a lot better. The sounds in the game are also pretty great as the music in the game perfectly suits each stage and the sounds that each goo ball makes are a nice addition to the game and add to the personality of the game a lot.

Although there are only 5 worlds in the game and there are only about 8-10 stages per world depending on the person each world can take from 1 hour to complete to 3 hours depending on the skill of the person playing it. Still theres a tonne of replay value and thats where the world of Goo Corporation comes in. In each stage you have a set number of goo balls to collect (lets say 6 for example). If you then, once completing the level, collected 10 goo balls the 4 extra goo balls are sent to the world of goo corporation. Here you are able to create your own huge structure, the sole goal being to try and make your tower as tall as possible. You can then compare your towers with other people around the world as clouds will float towards your tower telling you the name, country and height of people that have towers taller than you or shorter than you. This players the incentive to go back to stages they have completed and try to complete the stage with as little amount of balls as possible.

The world of Goo Corporation can add 5 minutes replay value or 5 hours replay value depending on how much time you are willing to spend on it but most people will spend around 2-3 hours on it as it is very addictive and it is very enjoyable trying to make your structure as tall as possible especially since you are competing with thousands of people around the world. The actual story mode of the game will take a skilled gamer 4-6 hours to complete but if you enjoy taking your time on a game and are willing to go back and try to get as many balls as you can so you can add to the World of Goo Corporation and if you are willing to spend a long time on it you can easily get 10 hours or more out of this game.

World of Goo... Its hard to believe the game was created by just 2 people.
Overall, like I said before, the game is beautiful, the gameplay is genius, the game has tonnes of replay value and for $20 this is probably the best downloadable game you can get, for that price

$20/$20 (Y)

PLEASE NOTE: after reading this please dont just illegaly download world of goo the developers(2) put alot of time and money into making this game and for just 20 dollors not only youll go to heaven ;) but your supporting indie game developers

Can we ask that all downloads are uploaded as an attachment to the forum, we allow up to 250mb zip or rar's. For bigger files please speak to myself or Nimrod about the download and we will let you upload it to the Digiex FTP.

Although we allow beta software and older games to be uploaded we are not a warez forum, please don’t upload cracked applications, newly released games, movies, music cd’s or TV shows.

Example of a Driver Download
Nimrod created a hacked driver to allow the ISSCEDRBTA Bluetooth dongle to function under Windows Vista 32bit and 64bit editions, as this driver wasn’t available elsewhere it became a massively popular download. There no point in uploading the latest drivers for something unless there not available on the manufactures website for what ever reason. Drivers that add removed features such as the creative drivers by Daniel K are more than welcome as download like this are not always the easiest to find and we can provide a good stable mirror for them.
