I have been having alot of problems with my games. For some reason I am unable to install any of them. I have had some PC trouble so reinstalled my OS (winXP Pro x86) I have the 500GB partitioned into 100GB for windows and 400GB for storage. I only formatted the windows partition. Since then I have been unable to install any of my games it is reporting CRC errors on mounted images on several of my games (is that even possible?) all of these images have worked just fine for me in the past. Also on the original DVD for Crysis it does this for me, which is a brand new game only been installed once and the disc is in perfect condition. I had thought viruses may of been the cause so i scanned with several antivirus and antispyware apps, and removed a HEAP of malicious programs. I reinstalled again and still the same issues. I re-downloaded all of my apps again (i had the setups on DVD) thinking this was the cause, reinstalled again, rescaned the system and still presented with these CRC errors, what could be the cause of all this? maybe the viruses had damaged the images and so re-downloading them would fix the problem, but that doesnt explain Crysis not working and the images were backed up on DVD and an external HDD, so thats not possible.

    What can I do?

    Also my specs are:

    Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0Ghz
    4GB Dual Channel DDR2-800 RAM
    nVidia 9600GT
    Motherboard with Intel's P35-Express Chipset

I had this exact problem many years ago on my old pc, I re installed windows and kept getting CRC errors with zip files and cd images.

I really could not work that one out as the cd images and zip files worked perfectly on another pc and before I re installed.

Eventually I just put it down to a bad windows install, sure enough I re installed XP again and the files worked perfectly.

You could try running a Check Disk with the “Automatically fix the file system errors” and “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors” That’s what I was advised to do, however it took hours to check and didn’t nothing to help fix my problem.

You would probably be better off re installing Windows XP, when asked do a full format on the XP partition.

Also what service pack level is your xp install cd?

If you have another pc around it might be an idea to integrate service pack 3 in to your install cd if you haven’t already.

I thought it could have been that except I have reinstalled about 5 or 6 times ALWAYS doing a slow NTFS format of my windows partition, It is a pretty new SP3 disc (Legit paid for). Everyone is talking of a failing DVD drive but I thought how does that explain the images not working, but if you are saying its an OS problem then maybe the faulty drive was preventing all the files being copied off the windows install correctly?

If your DVD drive is faulty Windows could be skipping files needed for a proper installation of Windows XP. I've had this problem with a few computers at work where the DVD or CD drive is whirring like crazy (Dell are crap makers of disk drives IMO) and Windows either skips files automatically or asks if you want to skip them. Then when Windows has loaded up Explorer crashes all the time, BSODs occure more than usual etc etc. Also had a case where the memory was faulty and this stopped Windows from copying the necessary files properly.
