Ever since Mario Kart 8 came out i've been thinking about getting a Wii U, this week I finally purchased one with Mario Kart 8 for £160 which I thought was a good deal.

The only Nintendo home console i've owned until now is a GameCube, which I must admit has been hooked up ever since I got it in 2002. Mario Kart Double Dash & Smash Bros Melee are fantastic for random 4 player fun with some mates gathered around the TV.

The type and style of games on the Wii U and vastly different to the Xbox 360 / Xbox One which makes a nice change, I do like the tablet style controller too. The ability to stream games to it works really well and is pretty handy if the TV is been used for something else.

Also I think its great with a bit of tinkering the Wii U is totally backwards compatible with every console Nintendo has released to date. The Wii mode on it can be hacked to enable GameCube compatibility and emulators for every Nintendo console before then, which is a nice bonus! The hack is very easy to do too, so watch out for a Digiex tutorial at some point ;)

The only thing I don't like is how expensive all the different controllers are for it, something which has always put me off the Wii / Wii U:

    • Wii U Pro Controllers are £35-40+ each, which kinda sucks when I want 4 of them
    • Wii Remote Plus - £30+
    • Nunchucks £10-15+
    • Wii Classic Controllers (Not exactly essential, however if wish to play Mario Kart Wii they would be required) - The USB adaptor for GameCube controllers would have been awesome here, however it only woks Smash Bros for Wii U from what I gather!
    • The price of new Wii U games seems much cheaper than the Xbox One / 360 which is nice too, however most older games don't appear to decrease that much in price either.

Apart from the price of all the different controllers I have to say the Wii U has impressed me, despite all the bad press Nintendo seem to get saying its failed. The Wii U has a good catalogue of games, which in all honesty are fun and actually cater for people playing in the same room on the same console, something the Xbox One doesn't really do that well at the moment.

The Wii U's biggest shortcoming is that its unique controller never caught on like Nintendo thought it would. That being said, I also have a Wii U and find it a joy to use.

That was probably part of the reason, it made the Wii U a lot more expensive then it needed to be. The tablet controller didn't really add much value when it came down to the core games, sure it had its uses like the Wii U could be used when someone else was watching TV, however i'd imagine that wasn't a selling point for most people.

Honestly though i'd say 2 years later the Wii U was a good investment looking back, the console sells for more second hand than i paid for it new. With hacks it's backwards compatible with every Nintendo console released to date with the exception of the 3DS. Plus its the only current console which really supports any sort of 4 player local multiplayer and co-op, something few Xbox One and PS4 games do.

On paper it failed, however i still maintain its a great underrated console.
