Dropbox enables users to store and sync files online and between computers, it has a cross-platform client that will work on Windows, Linux, Mac and mobile devices such as Android and the iPhone. The client enables users to drop any file into a Dropbox folder that is then synced to the web and the users other computers with the Dropbox client. Files in the Dropbox folder may then be shared with other Dropbox users or accessed from the web, Users may also upload files manually through a web browser. A free Dropbox account offers 2 GB of storage, although you can upgrade to 20 GB, 50 GB or 100 GB by paying a monthly or yearly fee. Dropbox also supports revision history so files deleted from the Dropbox folder may be recovered from any of the synced computers. I mainly want to use Dropbox when at Uni so I can just save any lecture notes or Powerpoint slides in the Dropbox and access them when im home, this should be a lot more convenient than saving them on my USB drive or powering my netbook up when i get home to copy the files off. Setting up and using Dropbox After installing Dropbox you can create a new account or login to your existing account. You can use 2gb of storage for free or upgrade to 50gb or 100gb for a monthly fee. After that you will be given a tour which explains how Dropbox works. You will then be given the option of where you want your Dropbox folder to appear, I have mine in my user folder, it could also be quite useful on the desktop or even in the default location which is your documents folder. Dropbox will then sync any files in your box to the computer you have just setup. If a friend shares a folder with you and you accept it will appear in your dropbox, you can then both contribute to that folder (like shared folder in MSN 8.5) Here is my user folder in Windows 7, as you can see my Dropbox folder integrates perfectly. The contents of my Dropbox folder, I can just use it like any other folder on my computer with the advantage of files in this folder been available to me from anywhere even if my PC is not on. Dropbox has a great user interface for its service. However, opaque release notes have kept me away. I much prefer full / reasonably full disclosure over a beautiful app.
