as of late, I have had a multitude of problems trying to send an email. I tried all the various port/SSL types in Avast. if I use the settings provided by Thunderbird from the database it works fine.

I did get it to work for a short time by telling Thunderbird/Avast to use Microsoft's SMTP server 65.55.172.254 with (I believe...) SSL on port 465. I pinged smtp.live.com multiple times and every now and then it would display different IP addresses and it seemed a lot of them never responded. except for the one I've mentioned as well as a couple of others. but now it seems to only work if I have Thunderbird use its settings without bring Avast into it. I can receive emails just fine no problem. but sending is completely different and it is frustrating... so I'm wondering if something has changed at Microsoft?

the only reason I would use this combination is that I've read a few people saying on other forums that Thunderbird checks for only a small bit of what Avast will scan I/O emails for. if there isn't really a difference in security then I'm fine with using Thunderbird without Avast scanning. though if having it route through Avast is a lot more secure, then... anybody got any ideas?

both programs are current versions. Avast 6.0.1367 and Thunderbird 9.0.1.

I haven't played around with it that much, it says something about disabling the ssl in thunderbird and avast provides the ssl connection.I'm not too sure about this.
