About the Pokemon Silver German Prototype / Demo:

This was purchased from a collector who was selling off various prototype carts.

These were all European pre-release roms, so the game was already out in Japan by that time. So from the beginning do not expect anything major since the Japanese game had already been released by this point.

However this prototype is not identical to retail. Its very similar but there are differences. We suspect that this was edited from a near final release to be made into a demo that would be sent to pre-release game reviewers, possibly even to be used at a public event.

The game starts normal, however once you finish the Mr. Pokemon / Rival quest, you are unable to continue into Violet City or Dark Cave. You just encounter a unique guard who pushes you away from the entrance gate with a quick text box.

The demo is supposed to stop here, however the fun began with walk through walls to get into Violet City. You can beat the gym as normal, however the Ruins of Alph and Sprout Tower are also blocked off by identical guards, which is very odd considering we're not supposed to have access to this area.

The theory is perhaps the demo was supposed to reach into Violet City, but they cut access in the end.

The only other differences to note is that when viewing the map it does not display any town name:

Also when viewing the trainer card you are not allowed to view the badge screen:

This was visually compared while also playing a retail German Silver, even though the prototype / demo does allow you to save the game and creates a savefile as normal, when you reboot the rom, there is no "Continue" option, so it forces you to start a new game regardless if a savefile is there.

These differences helped form the conclusion that they just didn't want reviewers to know town names or see gym leader faces. Then of course the inability to continue a save is a common demo feature.

Regardless if it not being anything groundbreaking, it is still indeed a very interesting and very rare rom that is now preserved for historical Pokemon preservation.

If any debug menu exists it has yet to be triggered. Spaceworld was also a short demo, but had hidden debug features.

All credit to @Deoxyz for purchasing this (for an eye watering amount) and allowing for it to be released to the community. As you might or might not know Deoxyz recently stepped down from any Pokemon preservation projects. I'd like to personally thank him one last time for all his contributions. Its safe to say he shook up the Pokemon scene, thanks to his efforts and coordination so much content has been obtained, preserved and finally released that would have otherwise been likely lost forever.

thanks @Deoxyz for sharing this demo with us! did a little digging with the demo and walk through walls myself. Pretty interesting that the whole finished product is basically in it, blocked by cheap roadblocks :D

Some of the funny things I discovered are that the sprites are a bit messy, often characters just display the Red Sprite.

Sudowoodows sprite is not used for Sudowoodo .The pokemon is displayed as a trainer but still makes the Sudowoodo sounds when interacted. The Sprite is in the game tho, since they used it for the twins just before reaching Ecruteak :D
The Sprites for rock smashable rocks and the Miltanks at the farm are also displayed as Red Sprites.

After going through the whole story..

-Kanto is indeed fully programmed! Magnet train warp point transports to saffron city. for those of you who, like me, are too lazy to get the surf HM.

    - City Names (Kanto Included) will display when using the HM FLY. Since its a german version the correct german town names can be found.

-Your starter Pokemon will not evolve, regardless of level. Other Pokemon (tried it with KENYA the spearow) will evolve. The Evolutions of your Rivals starter will appear normal as the story progresses.

    - Obtainable Gyms: 16/16. Elite 4: Yes. Red Battle: No. You can obtain 16 badges by using walk through walls, but cant continue after the E4. E4 AND 16 Badges is needed in order for Red to appear.

Edit : The "Red Sprite Glitches" only occur if you enter a loading zone via the walk through wall glitch, which is obligatory if you want to enter violet city. The twins are an exception. They will always stay sudowoodos.

Started a new file and tested it. Cyndaquil learns Ember (German "GLUT") at Lvl 12, as usual in Gen 2. Gen 4 and upwards its learned by lvl 10. Also, to double check my statement, cyndaquil didnt evolve either. Moveset by leveling up seems unchanged tho.
