Google Chromium OS Pre-Built VMDK Image

Google Chrome OS is a project by Google to develop a lightweight computer operating system devoted to using the World Wide Web. Announced on July 7, 2009, it is set to be released during the second half of 2010.The Linux-based operating system will sport a graphical user interface based on Google's Chrome web browser and will run on systems with either x86 or ARM processors, and designed for netbooks.

Google released the Google Chrome OS open source project on November 19, 2009 as Chromium OS. Originally it was thought to use a new windowing system, but is now confirmed to be using the X server.

According to Google, Chrome OS is being designed with a minimalist approach, much like the company's Chrome web browser. Chrome OS will rely on cloud computing, with most, if not all applications residing on remote servers, rather than on the device itself. Hence Chrome OS is aimed at users who spend most of their computer time on the Internet.

Google is targeting a range of devices, from netbooks to desktop PCs. Google has stated that the Google Chrome OS is separate from its Android operating system, which was designed primarily for use on smartphones.

Google also announced that the Google Chrome OS will feature a novel security architecture. According to Google's announcement, the company will be "going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates"

Note: I’m not sure how to get this to recognise the virtual network adaptor in VMware so you can log on, I really do need to get some sleep so ill have a play about with this tomorrow if I get chance.

Hi,

I'm running VMWare Workstation 6.5 and if you set the VM to be Linux and Unbuntu (32-bit) then the network adapter should be recognised - if it's set to NAT should work fine.

Did you build this image? If so what is the root password?

BTW CTRL-ALT-T gives you a terminal window

Cheers,
Al

Thanks for the tip, that appeared to sorted the networking issues out.

Sorry I don’t know the root password, I didn’t build the image. Just thought it would be a good download to share.

Hmm, with this being open and Linux based I may be able to put this as my "other OS" on my PS3.

Very interesting, use your Gmail account to log in, not sure I like that...

BTW, does anyone know how to change the screen resolution? Default sucks

I think maybe in the future the plan is you can log in to any computer running Chrome OS and all your settings / documents will instantly be available, just my guess anyway from what ive seen of the OS.

Im not sure how you would change the screen resolution, I only know the basics in Linux.

Someone has created a version you can dump on a usb stick and boot on real hardware, might be worth having a look at. It displayed in the native resolution on my netbook.

Done a little write up about it here: https://digiex.net/computer-discuss...e-chromium-os-chrome-os-running-msi-wind.html
