What's the biggest problem with Windows Phone? It's name.

by Nimrod on 11-05-12 at 23:33
Ive recently got myself a Nokia Lumia 800 after being dissatisfied at my Samsung Galaxy Nexus Android phone. I love it and since getting it I don't believe I could ever go back to an Android or even back to the iPhone (which I had for 3 years!). Where's on your traditional smartphone phone you have apps to interact with the internet and various networks you use, on Windows Phone they are all built into the OS and integrated over your entire experience (from the Messaging App which supports SMS, MMS, Facebook Chat and Messenger to the People App where all your contacts from various networks all come together, link and group themselves). Windows Phone of course still has your traditional app experience to, the integration alone is what sets the phone apart.

A prime example was today I went to Subway with a few friends from work for lunch, we wanted to tag ourselves there and off one of them went and a minute later starting moaning the Facebook App is being slow and others agreed. I then grabbed my phone, and within 10 seconds I have tag us all there to the amazement of my co-workers. It's that integrated experience which makes everything so quick and simple. Why should you need to open the Facebook App, wait for it to login, then wait for it to load locations, then wait for it to load your friends list to complete the tag in, when your phone already knows who your friends are and already knows your location. Integration makes Windows Phone amazing. (Please note, there is many examples besides simple things such as tagging friends, but thats the example I experienced today)

There's other parts of the phone to which are impressive, including the lighting speed of the entire GUI, the speed of launching apps and how the phone never seems to lag unlike our Android friends who need a quad core CPU just to get a front end GUI to load without lag. Regularly when I show someone, they are impressed but the biggest hurdle to showing them is the utter

People using religion to hide bigotry – The last hurdle in equal rights for all

by Nimrod on 10-03-12 at 14:49
Recently on the news both in the UK and US there has been a lot of anger from religious people (including even the pope) going on about equal marriage and how its wrong and they must stand up against Governments plans to allow it.

Normally speaking racist, homophobic, sexist or other unpleasant bigotry on the media is a big no however religion seems to be the last safe place for people to do just that. Somehow justifying their religion as protection for them to speak out hatred on an issue that doesn’t affect them and being protected from the law because of that. The truth be told, its nothing but hate.

The fact is, if someone wants to marry someone of whatever gender, it’s his or her choice. Marriage is about committing your relationship on paper and provides certain benefits (specifically on tax, housing and health issues). It is not owned by any religion based on the fact that people can get married if they are Christian, Muslim or even Atheist. The key point is you do not need religion to become married. Yet somehow when someone wants to marry someone of the same gender to him or her, suddenly Marriage is a religious thing and cannot be offered to him or her because the bible says it’s unacceptable.

Honestly speaking on behalf of myself, I couldn’t give a damn if someone wishes to marry the same or opposite sex, it doesn’t affect me personally in any way as it doesn’t stop me continuing my life like nothing happened. The reality of the situation is, it will not bring the end to society, and it will not bring down moral values anywhere. Life will go in, as it is right now and will not affect anyone, not even churches who can just not offer marriage to those they do not want to marry.

For someone to speak out against it, is nothing short of a bigot who needs to be challenged or silenced. If you don’t believe two woman should get married then there is a simple solution, don’t marry another woman (if you’re

America and the great big 4G Lie

by Nimrod on 10-12-11 at 19:51
Hello All,

Not a big blog post I'm afraid, but just wanted to share some interesting stuff I've learnt today. In the media in the UK we have heard time and time again about how 4G is coming, how the UK is behind the world because of the delay to the spectrum being freed up. Over in the states however, I keep reading about how Verizon has there LTE 4G network, AT&T and T-Mobile and their 4G network and Sprint and their 4G WiMax Network.

Truth be told. America doesn't have 4G at all. (Except maybe Sprint, which has very poor coverage outside of one or two major cities). Verizon are lieing. They do indeed have an LTE network, but LTE network is not 4G. T-Mobile and AT&T are deploying HSPA+ and claiming its 4G. The same HSPA+ which Three, o2 and soon Orange/TmobileUK are deploying over here. The key difference? We aren't claiming its 4G. It goes to show how in America anyone can get some 3G tech (or should I say, 3.5G tech) which isnt 4G and claim otherwise.

So from this little rant, you now know that the 4G America is enjoying, can be enjoyed across the UK, Europe and most of the world. The only difference is in most cases its illegal to claim something is '4G' when its not outside of America.

Now it's time to claim my Galaxy Nexus with HSPA+ on O2 UK is using 4G and stick a 4G sticker on the back.

Couple of interesting facts:

Verizon LTE "4G" is actually slower than T-Mobile's 3G 'HSPA+' on bandwidth tests across multiple states.

There are rumours that AT&T are asking Apple to update the iPhone firmware so when its connected to 3G with HSPA+, the icon at the top says 4G instead of 3G. If this is true, that really is sad.

By the end of 2012, All UK networks would have deployed HSPA+ meaning if we had America's laws on advertising we would be able to claim 90% 4G coverage nationwide. America couldn't even come close to that. So we're

Lets talk about IPv6 at Digiex

by Nimrod on 10-10-11 at 12:40
Hello

People may not know me so much around these forums as its mostly insanenutter posting like crazy, but I'm the guy behind the scenes working on the Digiex Web Server and Vbulletin. I'll like to take a moment of your time to discuss IPv6 and how Digiex is ahead of its times with this technology. What is IPv6 you ask? Well its the next generation of IP addresses on the internet. To sum it up quickly, the IP addresses you know like 80.0.0.0 are running low due to the mass expolosion of the internet and we need a new address scheme called IPv6. A typical example of an IPv6 address is: 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334. You can read further into the topic at Wikipedia at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6

Over the coming years, your ISP will be silently enabling this for you, and if your home router supports it (or is provided by your ISP) it will most likely be enabled without you even knowing it. The main benefit of it is it removes the 'NAT' part of your router. So instead of having one IP address shared by all your devices at home and you needing to do port forwarding to host stuff, you can instead have hundreds of IPv6 addresses -enough for one for each device.

Digiex started being a the forefront of IPv6 awareness first in its Minecraft Server, offering users the chance to connect via either IPv4 and IPv6, to push people who could use V6 to use it we went a step further and offered ingame rewards for users using it. The point of this? Mostly just to make people aware, as awareness is important. You may think not, but say in the future you have to pick between a few ISP's at the same price and the same benefits, but one had v6 support and others didnt, that then could be the deciding factor. The whole reason of IPv6 Day (a few months back) and the Digiex IPv6 push is to try to make awareness of IPv6 and make people start questioning there ISP's about there plans.

Starting as of today, you can now access

Bungie's urk comment regarding Halo Reach Achievement Farming on Firefight.

by Nimrod on 19-09-10 at 16:06
On Bungie's first weekly update since Halo Reach has launched, they had something to say about achievements regarding Firefight. Link to Full Article

Heres the bit in question which made me think, what a jerk.
With great power, comes great responsibility and Cooperative Multiplayer Lead Lars Bakken informs me that it was well understood that by adding full customization to Firefight certain players would decide to cheese the related achievements (i.e. the laziest, least skilled players). The solution to this problem would have been simple, we could have either cut the Firefight Achievements in question or cut Firefight customization altogether. Neither of those would have made Lars very happy.

So yeah, Firefight in Halo: Reach is literally what you make of it. If you want to take the easy way out, and download game variants from IGN’s File Share, feel free. You’re only impacting your own enjoyment. You're also a baby who sucks at Halo. Your call.

Luke has a slightly different take, noting that if you want to utilize the wealth of available Firefight customization options and our built-in File Browser and File Share features to download an easier way to snag these particular achievements, or if you create a variant of your own design, you've simply discovered yet another one of Halo: Reach's robust features. It's what you call a Win/Win.
So the jist of it, is all over this Acheivement worth a small number of points (I think 25g off the top of my head) which you get for scoring over a million points in Firefight. To put this into prospective, on normal difficulty it would take around 8-12 hours to complete, depending on level and how often you get multi-kills, and around 4-6 on Legendary difficulty. To get this score, you as a team (up to 4 people) must fight wave after wave of enemies, with it slowly getting harder and adding more skulls (which modify the game to make it difficult, including blocking
