I have often wondered who should leave feedback first, I believe it should be the seller as once the buyer has made the payment there’s nothing more the buyer needs to do except wait until the item is received. When I have sold items on Ebay once I’ve received payment I’ve always left good feedback and posted the item.

I have noticed when I buy something on eBay the seller never usually leaves feedback until I have received the item and left them good feedback first. I’ve never thought that’s right, if you leave them negative feedback you’re going to get negative feedback in return from the seller.

So who do you think should leave feedback first? The seller or buyer?

I think that it doesn't matter once the sale has been made successfully.
They sending it don't know when you will recieve it, so might just wait for you to go first.
I've only really got one experience of ebay, and the guy came here to pick up what we were selling.
Then later we both left good feedback, no biggy! :)

The problem is simple, sellers can hold the buyer to ransom, with the threat of negative feedback if the buyer dares to complain. Many times when Iv bought an item, I honestly considered leaving either neutral or negative feedback because the item was in worst condition that stated, or postage was a rip off for the cost (I've paid £10 delivery, and the stamps show it cost £3) or the seller was slow in posting.

I've also had many sellers email me saying leave postive feedback and they will do the same to me. Then I sent them an email back saying they should leave feedback first. This is one issue I wish ebay would address, its such a simple issue to solve.

When buying an item, its the buyers job to pay for the item, once thats done their role in the matter is done. The seller should then be forced to give feedback for the buyers part and ONLY the buyers part (Ie: feedback on if they paid quickly).

Then when the item arrives, its the buyers turn to give feedback on the item, without fear of negative feedback in return. If at this point the seller hasnt already left feedback then they forfit the right to leave feedback as soon as the buyer has left them feedback to stop them fighting back with feedback. (It takes at least a day or two from payment till item arriving in post so they had plenty of time).

This may sound against the seller but its really not. I sell a lot of stuff on eBay and as a seller I have had no problem giving feedback the moment the payment is clear. If a buyer then leaves me negative feedback you have the system there to challenge it.

I got one negative feedback removed that someone left me for the item getting lost in the post. The user choose to pay less and get the item sent unrecorded, so I had to wait 28 days till I could claim from Royal Mail. After 7 days I offered a refund to the user then planned to wait 3 more weeks before I could get the money back from the postal company. I explained this to eBay on the Dispute console, and they went in my favour saying I did everything right and the negative feedback was removed. So the system does work.

Then again eBay is too big and too scared to upset the big sellers (who make them a lot of money) who love using negative feedback threat to stop getting negative themselfs. eBay needs a major overhall, or proper competetion so it can catch up with common sense.

Good overview, I guess I can't really comment on it well since, like I said, I've never really used it.

I tend to agree that the seller should leave feedback once payment is received. If there is an issue with the item during transit it is really not the sellers fault because they more than likely have shipped the item based on what they charged the buyer. If the buyer leaves negative feedback based on what the item was shipped in or damage caused by the mail service that should be removed.

What some buyers forget is that shipping and handling fees also include any eBay-related fees (or at least I tend to consider them when posting an item for sale).

I received one negative feedback from some dude complaining about how I shipped a football card he received. Not because it was damaged. Not because it wasn't in the shape I described it. Only because it wasn't shipped how HE thought it should be.

Stuff like that irritates the crap out of me.

I totally agree with you idea of forcing them to leave feedback once the item is posted, the seller has no reason to leave anything but good feedback if the transaction has got to that stage.

Your also right it is the bigger sellers that never leave feedback unless you do, I’ve noticed people who usually have 100 or less feedback leave it right away like I do.

The feedback system has improved somewhat (last year I believe) as you can now rate the postage cost, quality of service and so on. I always find myself leaving good feedback but then one or two stars for the postage cost as I’ve been charged £3+ and looking at the stamps its cost less than £1 to post the item.

I agree Insane, Ebay need something where before you can sell the item you must ship it to ebay. This way both the seller and buyer loose out on shipping. If the item didn't sell ebay would take away there ebay charge and pay to ship it back. If the item did sell then the buyer would be responsible to pay the shipping and ebay would then have a new system that knew exactly how much money for shipping would be. This way your not over charged for shipping. Lol :D

Ever since they prevented Sellers from leaving negative feedback they may aswell leave feedback once the buyer has paid.

So your saying it’s impossible for sellers to leave negative feedback now?
I didn’t know this, it’s been a while since I sold anything although I’ve purchased a few things lately.

I don't know if that sounds like a good thing to be honest, buyers can be just as awkward as sellers.

Agreed, that still dont sound right ill have to look in to it.

I still like Nimrods idea where sellers have to leave feedback so long after the item has been posted or the loose the ability to leave bad feedback.

That works both ways, buyer don’t pay so the seller can leave bad feedback, but once he’s got his money and shipped the item out he can only leave good feedback.

Maybe neither of the feedback should be revealed till both have made their replies?

Like Dunham says, it doesnt matter anymore. When I went to leave a buyer feedback I got the message:

Buyers, you can no longer receive negative or neutral Feedback from sellers.

    • You should leave honest and accurate Feedback without the fear of receiving negative or neutral ratings.

Perfect! I’ve never had any problems on eBay however it’s good to know sellers can’t leave me negative feedback if I ever have anything bad to say about them (not that I ever have actually :))

Still don’t really get why most sellers don’t leave feedback until you do but I guess it don’t really matter anymore.

I still think its the wrong solution, as a seller I cant leave feedback even if the person hasnt paid or messed me about, wheres he can leave me it. The solution I made would have done twenty times better, still giving a seller a voice without giving the buyers too much power :O
