I thought I would take a moment and share what I have experienced recently with my home network connection. I got a new Internet service provider since the local one I was using had too many dropped connections and my job depends on being online. But at least the modem was in the office and I could use an Ethernet cable to connect to my desktop computer to the Internet without using WIFI. This has not been the case with my new connection. The modem was in the living room. So I had to find a way to connect my desktop computer using wifi. This meant I had to buy a stick-like device and plug it into a USB port as a sort of antenna But I had issues with this. Sometimes the connection dropped. After a while I have resorted to having an Ethernet cable go from my living room to my office. And this is where I am now. Any thoughts? It works. And, as the expression goes, "if it is not broken, don't fix it" but maybe I should be looking ahead to a better solution. I was thinking about a wifi booster. But, on the other hand, is there nothing better or faster than having a direct and hard wired connection?
For a computer their is nothing better than a Ethernet connection, which also happens to be the most cheap solution. I can't think of many situations where the cheapest solution also happens to be the best solution, so I'd enjoy your victory here! Wireless range extenders that pickup your existing WiFi signal and re-broadcast it are not great, you get half of the maximum throughput due to the way they work. Another wireless access point would be better if you really need better WiFi, however you'd still need to run an Ethernet cable to this access point. If you got something like a home plug that allows you to use your power lines for networking these can be better than WiFi in some situations, however it really depends on the electrical wiring in the place you live. These also cost a lot more than an Ethernet cable, so why spend more money to solve a problem that no longer exists? I'd simply keep using the Ethernet cable to just spend some time ensuring its tidy / out of sight, run it under the floor or something if you can.
