Somebody at Microsoft appears to have flicked a switch a little early, with an advertisement appearing on the Xbox 360 dashboard tonight for Gears of War 3.

There's the trademark Gears of War logo, and a tagline that reads "The epic story concludes April 2011".

The ad appears to have jumped the proverbial gun, with the official reveal of the game not expected to have taken place until an appearance from Epic's Cliff Bleszinski on the Jimmy Fallon show on Monday night.

He of course was supposed to have been on the show, well, last night, but his appearance was pulled at the last minute. Guess somebody forgot to pass that onto the Xbox 360's ad team!

Gears Of War 3 will shake up the franchise's acclaimed cover system and feature underwater missions for the first time, Edge can reveal.

Developer Epic Games is set to evolve the combat by introducing new Locust foes with tentacle-like appendages which are capable of extending to player cover spots.

Meanwhile, the COG members of Delta Squad will be equipped with explosives that can travel beneath the ground to take out enemy cover positions, our US publishing source told us.

While the first two Gears games offered mobile cover in the form of objects like burnt out cars that could be pushed around, Gears Of War 3 will feature a heavy duty mech suit the COGs can utilise both for protection and to wreak havoc.

All of these new features will be present in the singleplayer campaign and multiplayer modes, Edge understands.

We were also informed that the game will be set during the summer and introduce a number of new environments to the series, including underwater locations. The end of the last title saw the COGs sink mankind’s last city, Jacinto, and flood the Hollow in order to take out the Locust Horde beneath the surface.

Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 demo at GDC in March showed off jungle or foliage-heavy areas, which could also make an appearance in Gears Of War 3 - Epic previously used GDC 2008 to debut Unreal Engine upgrades that went on to show up in Gears 2.

Gears Of War: Jacinto's Remnant, a novel written in conjunction with Epic, continues the Gears story from the conclusion of the second game. One story strand focuses on the island of Vectes, a former COG naval base sporting fertile lowlands, forests and a river. This setting could be ideal to show off the developer’s new Unreal Engine features were it to show up in Gears Of War 3.

Gears Of War 3 has yet to be officially announced. However, Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski is set to reveal a new game on Monday’s episode of US talk show Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and it could be on the agenda. He was originally set to appear on tonight’s show - the same day we predicted Gears Of War 3 would officially be unveiled – but said that the change in schedule would allow Epic “to take a couple more days to polish” its game.

In response to this report, Microsoft told us that it "does not comment on rumour or speculation”.

Can't wait to see some footage of the game. Shame that the game won't be out until 2011, but it's understandable; Microsoft wouldn't want to pit its two biggest money making series Halo and Gears this holiday season. I hope that the terrible matchmaking process from the second game is fixed. We'll have to see what Cliffy B. has to say on Monday night.

If only this game wasn't so wretched...but it is.

Are there any games you do like? What's so terrible about Gears of War? (besides the matchmaking)

Yeah, Final Fantasy series (except for X-2 and XII), Mega Man Legends 1 and 2, Bioshock, Over-G, Fallout 3...the list continues. I just find it really annoying not being able to do that much in your surroundings. Not being able to jump, the quirky controls and the annoying sprinting.

Ironically, some parts of the Gears campaign are literally 'Wretched', fans know what I mean..

    And for a little spoiler:

Underwater campaign chapters are very logical, as Gears 2 ended with Jacinto being washed away. But Marcus' dad Adam Fenix still appears to be missing, with his location most likely being underground. And with the governments headquarters down and most likely the big stranded camps as well, living out the last small human resistance underwater is a logical conclusion.

And so, the Locust said they will not stop, so they'd probably evolve underwater as well. Though this will not be 'Bioshock meets Gears', in fact, the Gears universe has a much darker atmosphere.

I'd love to see GoW3 sequel. The first and second were really good apart from some matchamkin errors. :D
