I'd definitely say it needs. Xbox 360 is getting a new dashboard and looks wonderful, even better than the current one. Honestly I don't know why Sony isn't doing any progress with their PS3 XMB menu and also allow PS2 backwards compatibility plus give OtherOS back (+ big update for the internet browser). We were probably lucky enough to get 2/4/5 (depending on how many PSN accounts) PS3 full free games and the PS Plus content. Anyway, I've edited out my details from my PSN account to fake ones, because LulzSec can get hold of the database at any time because Sony servers are kids stuff to the hackers. Question: If the PS3 is hacked, is there any chance of making it be Region Free Blu-ray and DVD Player? Thanks.
LiveArea is the successor to the XBM, to be honest it looks horrible from what I have seen anyway. No idea of the PS3 will ever get that, but I would hope not. The XBM worked well on the PSP, however I always thought something better could have been done for a console connected to a large screen.
Yup it needs a major update, that is probably the least of Sonys worries at the moment though. I dont think we will see anything new for the XBM until the PS4 to be honest.
to be honest id doubt they will update it maybe ram restriction? only has 256mb ram which is one of main reasons while it cant play music in background on most games as thats while some developers cut it as it lowers framerate i heard where as xbox can play it universally as it has a specialized version of wmp now heres a Concept if they did it like this it would be Awseome
When it comes to programming Microsoft know what there doing, that's why the 360 has had cross game chat and in game MP3 support since day one. Then soon after launch background downloading in games and later cross game party chat. The PS3 has limited ram yes, however it would only require a couple of MB to play an MP3 in the background i'm sure, if some old phone like the Nokia 6630 can do it then the PS3 is more than capable. I don't think the ram is an issue, its likely Sony see no reason to upgrade the XBM.
yep they release updates that most ps3 users dont need and funny thing is they charge for background downloading which is kinda funny as xbox does it fore free ps3 has gone downhill at an alarming rate over there security ect yet it amazes me no hacker group has attempted to attck microsoft is it because they have more money and power behind them and that they have more sophisticated security?
Yeah, it's definitely not a RAM issue as to why they can't have MP3 playback. The PS3 has 256MB of XDR DRAM and 256MB for RSX. Which makes it just as good as the 360. In order to have music playback, the PS3 would have to put MP3 playback on one of the SPU's which are already being used by playing a PS3 game and it would also take +3% of the PPU which would cause in game slowdowns, while some games would probably work just fine with music, the more demanding games would lag and possibly crash from stability issues. As far as the OP. PS3 will never get OtherOS back, it will never have PS2 emulation since no more Emotion Engine (there were rumors of external accessories being developed by Sony to allow BC but I doubt it'll happen.). The PS3 has already been hacked in a way to allow region free Blu-Ray and DVD playback. As of the moment it's being worked on to allow Blu-Ray and DVD ISOs to be played back via hard drive. That should be pretty easy as it'll probably just be a fake mount to the disc drive. I'm on a hacked PS3 with 3.55, i'm just waiting on PS1/PS2 backups to be able to be played from the hard drive. I have a BC PS3 I got for a very awesome price about two years ago, only payed 225 USD for it when they went for 600 at launch.
I haven't got a clue where you found out Sony charge for background downloading seanpr92. Not true, as far as I'm aware I've never been charged. As for the XMB itself, I'm not bothered about it really. I got used to it on the PSP and even my Sony Blu-ray player has XMB. I was quite happy with the original "blades" the 360 had and wouldn't mind going back to it. As far as I'm concerned, if it's easy enough to navigate and looks good it's fine by me
