Big thanks for the guide - used it to upgrade my 4gb to a 320gb. I ended up using a "WD Blue Notebook" with a model # of WDBABC3200ANC - when you open the box, the drive actually was a WD3200BPVT. The biggest problem I had was finding the right chipset to flash the drive. I started out with the desktop (Asus P5K Pro)- hddhackr would would always see the drive but it came up with the "Reading HDD Sector 16 failed!" error . I tried adjusting the bios (after putting it in ide mode) to disable smart, disable multi transfer, disable lba - pretty much everything - even tried disconnecting all drives, tried all sata ports, no love - finally I hooked the drive up to a dell laptop and it worked first try.. go figure. Popped it in the 360 formatted the drive and was good to go!

    Hi,
If I hack a new 320GB western digital hard drive for a new Xbox360-Slim with 4gb using the Xbox 360 320GB Hard Drive Security Sector and Download HddHackr v1.30 Build 20110303 will I still need to do the partition 2 thing to run legacy Xbox games? HddHackr is a .rar which costs $30 how can I get a .rar extractor for free?

Also, if I buy the Microsoft brand will it already be setup to run legacy Xbox games?

Anyone buy an aftermarket NON-Microsoft drive already setup to run legacy aka arcade Xbox games?

I’m weighing my options as I can get the 320 Microsoft brand with a game included for $130 (not bad) or a generic for about $60. If I buy my own parts I’m at about $90 but it is a 7200rpm at 16mb cache.

    Thanks in advance

You can use winrar(trial) or 7zip to extract.

    Yes

Some people have to copy partition 2, depends on the seller.

I found this freeware on Cnet.com "Free RAR Extract Frog" I have not used it yet but it has good reviews hope that helps me and others.

Is a BEVTRTL the same as a BEVT? If so, I found a BEVT (I'm guessing the RTL just stands for "retail", as in "in retail box") for $39 at Fry's that I can go pick up tomorrow :]

This is the drive in question:

    FRYS.com*|*Western Digital

Sorry if it's a n00b question, I just really need to ask before I blow $40 on an HDD, lol.

Hmmm it seems as though my posts with questions regarding formating and so on after using the flash on hddhackr has disappeared why was it removed. I just ordered the drive from newegg Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook HDD @ $69 and feeling good about it thinking I can get good answers to my question and my post deleted?

You have made a similar post here and it was answered.

I also had posed a question about when to format the drive with the xbox system maybe I missed the answer to that? Flash with hddhackr then plug into console and format then use hoffmans partition or flash then use hoffmans partition the plug into console and do a system format. I may have missed that necause I have the 4gb console that I just got and I'm not seeing uniformity in the steps. Thank god I saw that my posts were deleted; as a result I cancelled my order of the hard drive until I know everything that needs to be done.

I guess I'm also fearful that this process might turn my Xbox into a bot.

    Thanks in advance

I must of read your post wrong, sorry about that. I don't think it really changes anything if you format or not, its optional though.

You can use the hdd to play anything from the xbox live marketplace or installed from a game disc. Games won't work if you simply copy them from an unknown source, such as off the web to the hdd.

After experiencing fatx error all day, finally put the drive in my slim and formatted. No more Fatx error, but would like to know how long it takes to restore partition 2. Using a xp pc with sp3 and running the program as administrator. Its just sitting on restoring device window and does not appear to be doing anything.

Found the answer after searching the thread. Had to use hddhackr to create partitions.

It should only take less than 1-2 minutes.Try restarting the pc then reconnecting the hd when the desktop shows up.

I bought the HDD, hooked it up, flashed the USB drive as the guide instructs (It's an 8GB Sandisk) but the formatting tool would only let me pick FAT32, exFAT, or NTFS, no FAT... So I picked FAT32... Then changed the setting from the default AHCI to IDE, booted via USB, typed hddhacker, and it just goes down a line and sits there and I can't do anything but reboot... I've tried it on both my laptop and my gf's, and neither will do anything more... This is really frustrating. What am I doing wrong..?

Sadly you dont appear to be doing nothing wrong, it appears you are just unlucky in that hddhackr does not like the chipset in either laptop you have tried.

So there's nothing I can do to fix it but sit around and wait? Ugh... I guess I'll have to make a trip to my parents' house and try out the 3 different types of desktops that are there... Funny, you'd think between a Gateway laptop and an emachines laptop, one of them would have worked <.<
