It's no secret the Xbox One has been getting slammed for under par graphical performance when compared to the PlayStation 4, however is it really that bad?

A new video has just been released showing the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, the video compares all current gen vs next gen versions of the game.

The game runs at the following resolution / frame rate on each platform: http://trailers-ak.gametrailers.com/gt_vault/1/t_metalgearsolidv_consolecomparison_10kbps.mp4

    PS4 - 1080p 60 FPS
    XB1 - 720p 60 FPS
    PS3 - 720p 30 FPS
    360 - 720p 30 FPS

Download and view the video here:
The difference between the PS3 and PS4 version of the game is massive, the PS4 version has significantly more detail.

Yet the Xbox 360 and Xbox One version of the game look near identical, the Xbox One looks to have slightly more anti aliasing and that's it, it's not easy to tell the two versions of the games apart.

Now i understand graphics are not everything in a game, however i must admit i do lthink its very disappointing the Xbox One is 8 year's newer than the Xbox 360, costs £80 more than a PS4 (thanks kinect) yet a lot of games do look like Xbox 360 games.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending Xbox One entirely as its graphics performance so far has been pretty crap to be honest.

However we do need to take into account this game is being developed by a Japanese company which really couldn't give a damn about performance on Xbox considering it will never sell in their home turf. They likely just did a cheap quick port to Xbox One / 360 just to get some extra sales in Western markets. It certainly wasn't a lead platform that's for sure.

However up so far, a lot of the multi-platform ports have sucked on Xbox One compared to their PS4 counter parts which has been a big disappointment. However It's early days, if you look back at the first Xbox 360 games compared to mid-lifespan and towards end of life the quality jump's up big time. Right now companies doing multi-platform / multi-generation games like COD, BF4, NFS and so fourth really aren't putting that much effort into delivering a top class performance on Xbox One. They have four platforms to target and limited time.

In the long run, in a year or two we should start to see with developers getting to grips with the consoles and producing 1080p / 60 FPS as standard for 'ok' looking games, maybe the odd game that goes stupidly overboard with high def graphics or special effects might get rendered at a lower res than upscaled (Remember, Halo 3 / Reach weren't true 720p, but no one cared back then. It wasn't till this generation that 1080p has been the judgement call.

However that getting said, the PS4 is a more powerful device period. So while they may hit the 1080p/60fps standard for Xbox One games in a year or two, Playstation will still have more raw power allowing it's games to go that extra mile. That's something Xbox One players will need to expect this generation. It was the other way round last time yet it never stopped people picking a side, usually it was the game availability that sold them. If Microsoft keep up the exclusives, new IP (like Titanfall) and of course first party games they could get it in the bag again (at least Western, they will never crack Asia). Also if they ever get the Windows integration on Xbox One working as they should (meaning App Store) suddenly the Xbox One could become an awesome device for under your TV, the real 'One' device you need.

Either way, there is no doubt I, like you, are disappointed with the start for Xbox One. But it's earlier days, let's give them a couple of years before we throw in the towel. In retrospec, getting a console on its first year or two from launch might be something best to avoid until things get settled. If you liked Titanfall for example, it's not like you can't get it on the trusty Xbox 360. (For record, im really interested in Titanfall Xbox 360 vs Xbox one graphics comparison).

Do remember one final point though, console's have a long lifespan. I'm still glad they refreshed the console as it was needed, The Xbox 360 couldn't go on much longer as GTA5 showed which pushed it to its limit and then some. It may cost a lot, but if you work out the price of an Xbox One over say 6-8 years and compare that to how much you would spend on say a PC (or likely two if not more) over that time period, it's still good value for money.

I've been keeping up with the current-gen consoles that are going head to head and honestly PS4 seems to be the better one of the two in this case (Wii U is in its own league and I like it that way).

    PS4:
    + 1080p resolution
    + 60 frames per second

And then other stuff such as Free to Play games are free and if you play them online it's also free. There's no YouTube App for PS4 yet but when it arrives it'll most likely be free to use because it makes no sense to put a paywall on it.

I gotta admit PS4's making it hard to consider an Xbox One at all, also, if the exclusives are as good as they were on PS3 it's going to be epic.

Honestly, this is more of the fault of the Xbone than it is the developers. They wanted the game to run 60FPS on both the PS4 and Xbox One. If we take another game into example, like Tomb Raider. It was released on both consoles. On the PS4, it runs at native 1080p with FXAAx4 and peaks at 60FPS. It can get as low as maybe 45FPS but it usually stays around 55 and sometimes up to 60FPS. Now the Xbox One version. It runs 1080p (with video locked to 900p) with (I believe) still the FXAAx4. It runs at MAX 30FPS and even dips into the low 20s and very rarely under 20FPS.

With that big of a gap, with using the same assets in both games and the Xbox One performing so poorly, it's really no surprise that the Xbox One version looks so poorly so it can run at 60FPS. They should of sold the Kinect separately and done a little more with the console honestly. Supposedly they're going to let devs use 8% more of the GPU (since 10% was reserved for the Kinect) and the new SDK is suppose to help with performance but i'm not sure if it'll help too much.

That being said, the consoles have pretty much peaked on what they're capable of. Granted when they get a little more used to the consoles, they can probably do a little bit more but they are running on x86 architecture. They should be fairly used to it by now, though I can understand a few learning curves with the eSRAM and such. People think that because this console is new that we're going to have massive leaps in graphics and really, that isn't the case. Graphics are getting to the point where you can add so much more and you really won't see a massive difference. Compared to PS1 and the PS2, yeah there was a massive gap that could be filled but we're getting to the point where this gap isn't so massive anymore. The differences will be noticeable, yeah but overall it's not going to be anything mindblowing as previous generation gaps.

I read that Thief will be featured in 1080p on PS4 & 900p on the Xbox one,not really "next gen" in my opinion.
I think this might be 2005 all over again, with the release of the 360 (xenon) no HD and ready to red ring in a week,so you have to constantly upgrade every 2 years or sell your games for 2 pound each.

For those that played Beyond: Two Souls even if you just tried the demo you could tell that the game looked really impressive and would've been perfect for PS4's launch because it definitely looked like a "next-gen" game. The first time I played the demo I was amazed by the graphics because I had thought PS3 had reached its full potential but nope, at the very end Beyond: Two Souls came and showed me the way.

What PS4 & Xbox One need to bet is the same as Wii U's doing, superb exclusive games.

I'm so dying to get my hands on Bayonetta 2. *drool*

P.S.: I've noticed that Bayo 2 has similarities of Wonderful 101 and that is awesome!

Latest news on this subject in regards to Thief:

    1080p/30 PS4
    900p/30 XB1

The Xbox One was struggling to even hit 900p apparently, he Xbox One will have problems with 1080p forever due to the ESRAM and GPU Jeremy Conrad states on Twitter - @ManaByte

I guess we will have to wait and see how much detail has been removed so the Xbox One can hit 900p @30fps, sadly the disappointing news just keeps rolling in.

    Indeed :(

Though I do remember the ESRAM approach worked really well with the 360, pushing it further than most people thought possible. I wonder what the problem is with regards to this, this time around. Is it either the developers don't understand it yet or need time with it, or is it just really that useless compared to having the main bulk ram being a lot faster in general?

The problem with the eSRAM is that they only gave it 32MB. That's way too small of an allocation. If it were 128MB or even 64MB, this would help tremendously.

Someone replied to Xbox on Facebook with the below (right hand side - made me chuckle):

    Xbox Facebook Page.png

Still annoyed with the whole situation though :(

They better up their game big time with the worlds most friendly dev tools, massively optimized graphics drivers as well as usable example code to developers to help them get the most out of the Xbox One.
It's too late for them to change the hardware now, but if they put a lot of time and money into software it will at least give Xbox One games a chance to look good and hit 1080p/60fps soon by giving the developers all the tools they need.

Xbox one will "hit 1080p/60fps" in a couple of years, just like with the 360 started without HD & PS4 will be jailbroken again.

Well, there's a bit of good news for the Xbone already. Bethesda confirmed that the new Wolfenstein will run at 1080p 60FPS on the Xbox One, just as it will on the PS4.
