Nintendo have made an official announcement about the Pokemon Crystal release on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console. Crystal will be released on January 26, 2018 for $9.99.

Pokemon Crystal will also have Pokemon Bank compatibility, meaning its now finally possible to bring Pokemon all the way up to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon from every single core Pokemon game ever released.

For those that prefer physical releases, there will also be a boxed version that contains the game's download code released in Europe and Japan.

In addition it has been confirmed the Japanese version of Pokemon Crystal will allow you to obtain the GS ball in Goldenrod City's Pokemon Communication Center after beating the Elite Four. It has been confirmed the international releases will also be able to encounter Celebi, however as to how hasn't been confirmed yet. We suspect this will likely be from obtaining the GS ball from the Goldenrod City Pokemon Center after beating the Elite Four, as the event was programmed in to the international game when originally released on the GameBoy, however never used.

Needless to say it will be nice to officially have all the original Generation 1 and 2 Pokemon games available on the 3DS.

Neat that English Crystal Celebi would be legitimately possible for VC release, when it was never released for the original GBC back in the early 2000s.

You know what this means though, right?
Legit shiny Celebi is now possible, for the first time.

I mean, technically it was possible in Japanese G/S/C, but it couldn't be transferred over.

I think it's great the unreleased Celebi event is finally released all these years later, even more so it will be legitimately able to be brought up to the current gen, as a shiny if your dedicated enough. That would certainly make it worth playing through Crystal.

I still like the idea of a GEN 1 & 2 living Pokedex in GEN 2, that is something I might try for after i've finished Ultra Sun.

Honestly I don't know if I'd bother, because I already have HG/SS to play, so Crystal feels super redundant. Same reason why my Emerald cart will likely just be left to collect dust from now on. I don't know if I care enough about SRing for a shiny Celebi to play through the entire game just for it (and using someone else's save file would feel like cheating.)

I might, still... if I ever want nostalgia, Crystal is really the best one to play over Gen. I or G/S. But honestly I'm past the point of caring to basically play through the same game 3 times, 2 is already kinda pushing it since I was going to play through every pair of every Gen.

Great, I’ll get Crystal as I never played the original GBC release!

Will have plenty of time to finish Ultra Sun until then.

I think I've had a change of heart and I'm actually going to play it.
I'm also not gonna be playing through D/P anymore like I had originally planned. I figured I'll just complete the national dex through G6-G7, instead of getting each generation from their respective games. So I don't need to worry too much about older gens anymore, and I'll just play Platinum alone. Doesn't really matter if I can't get the few D/P exclusives.

Leaves some more time to play other games instead, and I've been thinking that Crystal/Emerald are probably still worth playing even though there's the remakes, just to get the original experience of the GBC/GBA games, and some nostalgia I guess (I know I know... totally going against what I said last time, don't need to remind me.)

And while I'm at it, I might as well try and SR for shiny Celebi, because hey. And once I'm done with Emerald, I wish I could just SR for shiny Mew but that would be a huge pain in the rear, so I might just end up RNGing for it and calling it a day. Maybe I can aim for a much later shiny frame, make it require more patience/effort/luck, so it feels more rewarding, and more like I've earned it.

That ended up being way longer than I'd thought. Anyway, imagine if they eventually released D/P/Pt on Virtual Console (on Switch or on a future console or handheld), if they actually added Azure Flute to it. That'd be super neat.

I must admit as of yet i've never played the 3rd game in any of the generations.

Crystal - I had a GB pocket, so couldn't play it even if I wanted to. However at the time the younger me didn't really see the point in the game, especially as we didn't get the Celebi event and I had no money to buy it anyway.

Emerald - I'd got out of Pokemon by this point and hadn't even finished Ruby at the time.

Platinum - I was at Uni at the time and got back in to Pokemon with some friends, we ensured we all purchased different versions of the games for easy trading. Diamond was the game I purchased, as Pokemon had for the first time got internet functionality and we all had different versions of the game between us, no one really thought it mattered too much what version you had as the potential for trading was huge.

I do play on playing though Crystal after i finally finish Ultra Sun, as it is the definitive Gen 2 game, which is my favorite Gen. I've no current plans to play Emerald or Platinum though.

NDS Virtual Console releases worked pretty well on the Wii U, so I can certainly see it's something that would be viable on the Switch. The Gen 4 games might well be the next games to actually get a remake in Gen 8, as the Gen 1, 2 and 3 games have been remade now.
