The Space World 97 Mew is currently the oldest event Pokemon we have the privilege of preserving and releasing to the Pokemon community.

This Mew was distributed at Nintendo Space World '97, which was held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan from November 21st to 23rd 1997. While originally going to be run until November 23rd, the distribution was later extended to the non-exhibition day November 24th.

Click the thumbnail for a full size poster from this event:

To be eligible to receive a Mew, players had to submit an application postcard, only 100,000 people were able to receive this Mew.
At this distribution, players connected their game cartridge to a Mew machine. On-screen, a visual of a Mew traveling through a cable to the player's game would appear.

How did we come to be in position of a Space World 97 Mew?

Reddit user salinbreezy posted in /r/pokemon/ about a Mew obtained in a local thrift store. In this store salinbreezy had purchased an atomic purple Game Boy Color with Japanese Pokémon Blue, Green, TCG and Gold games.

The Japanese Pokémon Blue had a save game present, with this Space World 97 Mew on the cartridge. Posting to Reddit about his find this got noticed by @HaxAras who informed@suloku, who then contacted @Deoxyz with a view of getting this extremely rare Mew preserved.

Deoxys made contact with salinbreezy who agreed to post him the Japanese Pokemon Blue cartridge, so the save game could be backed up, before the battery in the cart died.

The process and tools outlined in the Digiex guide GameBoy / GameBoy Colour USB Save Game / Rom Backup was used to backup the save game and make a rom dump of the cartridge. As suspected the cartridge was simply a standard Japanese Pokemon Blue cartridge with the SHA1 of 0da501e3e5c51ab8fef55b092dcdd7e6b050e424

    -space-world-97-mew-save-dump.jpg

However, the Space World 97 Mew was now preserved indefinitely. It has since been checked for legitimacy and confirmed to be a genuine event, making this is the oldest known event Pokemon to be preserved.

For some perspective Pokemon Red and Blue, the first Pokemon games to be released outside of Japan we’re released in North America on September 28th 1998, Australia and New Zealand on October 23rd 1998 and finally in Europe on October 5th 1999.

So depending where about in the world you are from this event Pokemon could have been distributed almost two years before Pokemon was released in your region. Needless to say this is a very rare find, even more so that the battery in the Pokemon Blue cart had lasted 21 years, here I was thinking my European Pokemon Red cart was doing well at 19 years!

Yo, I want my small piece of credit for this. Suloku came to me originally but I'd given my cart dumping tool to Deoxyz. So I messaged Deoxyz so he could set this up. It was only pure chance that I even seen Suloku's message though.

Surely you deserve credit, though both of you guys messaged me simultaneously to notify me. I had originally told the guys in our old group on ProjectPokemon that you were also involved. In regards to the the public Mew thread on PP, I only refrained since you had told me in the past that you didn't want further involvement in the community, but I'll edit it for you.

Nice! I haven’t played the Gen1 games for a long while but it’s always exciting to see something like this being preserved after all this time!

This is awesome! Here's a clearer look at the Mew distro machine as well as the interesting sprite. It's the exact same sprite as the one used in the Spaceworld '97 demo (Just skip to 32m15s):

Probably wishful thinking but can this be transferred to English copies of Red/Blue? If not that's okay, its just so cool to see that this event Pokemon hasn't been lost to history!! :D <3 Mew

Sadly not, Gen 3 is the first generation that can trade with the Japanese games.

I enjoyed playing games now that i could back up.. still finishing gen 1 cart.

I remember reading post (maybe in digiex) that it is possible to dump save files into VC (3ds). My question, is it possible to upload VC pokemon games to pc ? So that gs ball is obtainable when we clear the gym and meet the requirements ?

    So in simple :

    - play crystal on console / emulator pc until 16 badge obtained

    - dump save files to VC crystal games

    - obtain GS ball in VC

    - catch celebi in VC

    - restore save files to PC

    - dump back to console with celebi.

    Is it possible ?

Yes that's possible to do if you have the hardware to write saves to GameBoy cartridges.

It's incredible how we have two Japanese Mews for the Japanese games, does this mean Celebi is the only Pokemon we don't have to complete the Pokedex in the Japanese games? I don't know if there was a Celebi event but I bet there were more than 1 and I haven't found a Japanese save with a legit Celebi caught from doing the mobile event activated by legit means. Imagine if someone would upload a save before the Celebi fight, we could catch a shiny one! Of course such a save would be extremely rare but you never know with all the latest findings!

Yup that's correct. However if you are playing the Virtual Console releases of Gold, Silver or Crystal on the 3DS you can get a legit Celebi on that, the event is activated after you beat the Elite Four.

It would be nice to get an event Celebi though, such as the Nintendo Space World 2000 Celebi.

Do you know if it's possible to transfer a Japanese VC Celebi to the retail Japanese games with editors or even converting the VC save to retail save them trading it ingame with any game boy emulator? And if trading Pokemon between the international and Japanese versions is possible in the VC releases by normal means?

Yes you can use PKHeX or simply backup / restore the save. See: Pokemon GameBoy / Rom Save Transfer To 3DS

As for trading international and Japanese versions can't trade in Gen 2, from Gen 3 onward they can do.

Has anyone been able to successfully bring this into the virtual console and get it through pokemon bank flags?

You can use the Mew on a Virtual Console save, however you can't take it though Pokebank without editing the OT and Trainer ID to match the legit JPN VC Mew, so sadly not legitimately anyway.

As @InsaneNutter said, the only VC Mew able to pass the Pokémon Bank legality test is this one.
