So - here is the situation - xbox slim with internal memory(2 or 4gb) and a hard drive. It is just under 2 years old and never modified. Last Thursday evening the new dashboard update was pushed and we got the following status code: 4174-417F-1380-267F-C000-0185.

Over the next 4 day attempted everything under the sun - including 2 /12 hour call with a very good xbox technical support guy. During that call we did pretty much everything imaginable - Cleared cache, did the LB/RB/X/LB/RB/X, removed hard drive, loaded update from USB (failed), used extra special set of keystrokes to get the device back to "factory", which did not work - the xbox continues to remember all of my wired and wireless settings (I usually run it wired, but the wireless is setup so the kids can play in other rooms) and everytime it's turned on - regardless of what has been done to it - it remembers all the wireless settings and connects!

Very long story short - the guy from Microsoft said he believes there is a problem with the internal memory and the xbox requires service.

Here's the rub - the memory just happens to fail on the same day that a new dashboard update is released? While possible, it seems extremely coincidental - seems alot more likely that a) the memory problem was always there and the new update is stumbling into it or b) there is a bug in the new update.

Regardless - just wondering if anyone here has suggestions. I spent the better part of 15 hours this weekend trying to get this thing to work and have only succeeded in getting the xbox to be unable to even run minecraft and dishonoured (the kids play these two most).

By the way, I opened the xbox yesterday to attempt to remove the native memory (You tube video illustrated a way to remove internal memory chip mounted to MOBO under the DVD - no joy, there was no memory card mounted there. As I understand in this means that we have an older model with the memory hardwired onto the mobo?

Any help greatly appreciated - the goal here is to get the xbox logged back into xbox live so the kids will get off my case - and so I can play world of tanks.

    Thank You

Remove the internal memory, then place a hard drive in the console so the console has somewhere to store the avatar / Kinect required to connect to live.
If that doesn’t work you will probably need to send the console in to be serviced unfortunately.
