I was recently given a xbox 360 arcade as the former owner could not do anything with it as it was stuck after saying yes to update the console when he tried to play an old game.

The console seems to be modded or homebrewed, there is a switch on top which has a led turning blue when switched on.

Does anyone know how I can get out of this update loop and just have a console to play games?

    Error given ends with C000-001

Power on the console with the eject button, do you see Xell on screen?

It will look something like this:

Try with the switch flipped both ways and see what happens? the console could have a dual nand setup.

Thanks for trying to help out!

    Ok tried that.

Led/switch off : still boots into update screen and then error code
Led/switch on : nothing on screen, but power button flashed red

The switch on top has an USB male connect output next to it.as if I could plug an external 2.5" drive directly to it without a cable.

Console is connected to the TV using the RGB cables.

Any help would be appreciated, there are 1 or 2 kids who would love to play on this console.

From what you have said it appears the console has a dual nand mod and a flashed DVD drive.

When the switch is off that loads the Xbox 360 up as normal so it can connect to Xbox Live (presuming its not banned) however the DVD drive has been flashed with some alternate firmware so the Xbox 360 can play burned games.

When the switch is on the console would have loaded up in to a hacked system which cant connect to Xbox Live, however is capable of running homebrew, emulators and so on. It appears this nand has been messed up.

The problem you have is you have nothing that was backed up when the console is modded.

If you open the console up and look at the DVD drive you can find out what model / firmware it has, you can then flash that back to the stock Microsoft firmware. That should then allow the console to update.

Chances are you would have to invest in hardware to do this depending on the DVD drive in the console.

Ok, so basically I have a pretty brick on my hands.:D

The xbox is probably banned, as I looked up the error code. Which should not be a problem I guess, as we will not be using Live.

I will try to remove the drive and flash it with the stock firmware, if not it goes into the bin. Any trustworthy links with regards to the flashing software? If I try to download from this site, my browser goes on full alert stating this site has been marked as dangerous to download.

    I will keep you posted.

All the files here are trustworthy, however depending on the DVD drive you have might no longer be relevant, if you can let me know the make / model i might be able to advise.

In regards to the download's i'm trying to get the warning Google give a lot of the download pages on Digiex removed. Due to the fact some modding tools have the same characteristics as malicious programs Digiex sometimes get's flagged up as a malicious website by Google unfortunately :( - which is a pain to get sorted out!
