Well, I tried every trick in the book:

    > The trick to press for 5 seconds power button to appear that menu, tried that several times.. (every single option!)

    > Tried every option in the X bar (options also)

    > Plugged everything in and out...

    > Moved the HDD in and out...

    AND STILL NO PICTURE!
The only thing that I can see is the PS3 menu when you start the PS3... also the BD player is dead. When I start a downloaded game, it gives me the black screen of death...

    Sooooooo....... must I dump it?

How old is the PS3? maybe its under warranty. If its one of the older modes there as bad as the early 360.

You're gonna have to send it somewhere to get it fixed. Sounds like it needs the usual BSoD fix, cleaning, new thermal paste, maybe reballed. Depending on the FW you can remarry a BD drive to the console since it sounds like it's shot. If it's a older BC enabled model, i'd say it'd be worth the work but if not, either dump it or sell it really cheap, i'm sure someone would buy it even with all the issues.
