I've read over the guide here on stealth patching your game (making an iso, burning it, etc) and I was wondering.... just exactly how safe is this? on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being legit, 10 being...well, you get the idea.

I was going over this with one of my friends and he said if microsoft found out about it, shut down my console remotely. where I brought up that's what the stealth hack does. but I want to know from you guys who have done these modifications first hand. will it work? like if I installed one of these copycat games onto my hard drive, would it get shut off the next time I connected it to Live, even if I removed the installed content from the drive? I don't play online, at all.

or would it be safer just to play straight off the disc any time I used one of them? or install the game with a legit copy but use a copied version for when the drive needs the disc? and so on...

Microsoft does not have the rights to turn off any console at any time, but they can ban the console if you fail some required (ap2.5/2.6)checks and/or break any major tos.

For your console to read burned games the dvd drive needs to be flashed with iXtreme LT+ 3.0 firmware(if available to your drive) and the console will need to be on the latest dashboard.
I also answered some questions in red.

oh wow. just looked up the iXtreme stuff and this is not by any means light reading... I thought updating the dashboard would mess with the kernel as well? do I need to jtag my console for any of this to work? I apologise for asking so many questions. until last week I never actually looked into console modding in any form. is there some place I could start? I know there are guides here on how to do specific mods but none of it really seems to explain what the options are of those mods (other than how they should be done). I will keep reading, though.

do I need to update my dashboard first before jtagging or jtag then update? at the moment I have 2.0.13599. and from what I understood from another guide off somewhere that last set of numbers has to be under 7 or some such. this one "either or" question is what has had me confused for a while. though I suspect I should update it first...

    You can't jtag a xbox 360 with a dashboard version 13599.

argh. well that is disappointing ><

and I'm guessing there's no way to restore it to anything earlier, otherwise you would have mentioned something. thanks for being patient with my barrage of questions

--edit: I'm finding that this "reset glitch" thing would work still. unless the dashboard version makes the difference in whether or not something like that would work at all.

Reset glitch will work with any dashboard,it requires good soldering to the console's motherboard though.

Are you looking to use the jungleflasher program with the xbox dvd drive(flash) to play burned games or
do the reset glitch hack which will get you banned on xbox live within an hour?

Both of these mods will get you banned,a flashed drive takes longer for the console to be banned due to microsoft has a hard time detecting this.

either one, I suppose. if I used a flashed drive offline (since that is what I play anyway) could I just put an unflashed disc drive inside when I wanted to go online? or does it put information in the hard drive somewhere that prevents one from doing this? I guess my impression was for a lot of this (flashed drives, modchips, etc) you have to do something that involves some jtag business rather than just going at it by itself. I don't know the ins and outs quite yet so I'm still wondering what requires what to be done. so these tutorials are helpful to some degree (gonna download the jungeflasher tut in a sec) but it feels like (could just be myself over-thinking this) a lot of this requires you to already know what to do before you do it. I could be wrong, of course.

Each dvd drive in a console is assigned to that console, for it to work with other dvd drives of the same model you need a drive key,on how to extract that key depends on the drive model you have.Failing ap2.5/2.6 checks can ban the console.I play online sometimes with the flashed drive and nothing happens.

so to wrap this up (hopefully)... these abbreviations and such aren't that vital to getting this all to work, right? they are puzzling sometimes. -I only say this cause I don't know what things like "benq/liteon/AP" are- I know I probably should have just done this to begin with, but I guess all I should really do is download what I need, follow the tutorial(S) and if something comes up then I'll ask about it.

I won't be performing these tasks in the near future, though. I just want to try to understand it all first as best as I can before I actually get another system I feel comfortable testing this stuff on.

Those are the dvd drives inside the xbox 360 console, the slim consoles are more difficult to flash.
For the newest games like battlefield 3,batman arkham city, gears of war 3,ect you need an ihas drive to burn the games 100%
