I have been trying to install my Win98 SE in VMWare for about a month now. I have tried making my disk into an ISO and I still can't seem to get it to work. I would love to try your VMware img if possible. I even tried installing 95 same thing. I have a few games that will not work even in compatability mode so I am in need of this for those games. Thank you

    problem with shared folders

Does anybody have problems with shared folders?
When I share folder from local hard drive, it appears as network mounted drive.
In windows itself it can be easy accessed and listed through folders, however in DOS applications it is not working, e.g. dos applications can not access files from shared folder.
In norton commander contents of the folder (subfolders, files) cannot be opened and some unrecognized characters appears at the end of the names.
But if I share the same folder in regular way and access it through network interface, everything works! But the transfer speed is not brilliant, so it is not and option.
I tried different windows98se image and experienced the same problem, so I guess it is Virtual PC problem.
fshare.exe from DOS additions do not operate under windows environment.
Is there a way to access host shared folder from guest windows 98se directly? or anyone knows the solution for shared folders function?

Expanded memory is a very old MS-DOS phenomenon. Windows versions up to Win98SE (ME was really a tweaked out version of 98) all still used an MS-DOS "kernel", MSDOS.sys, io.sys. The "shell" was command.com.
You can run DOS application from a pure command line with these OSes but some ancient drawbacks will come to light, such as the need for expanded memory. DOS was originally designed to use up to 640k (assuming the machine would only have about 1MB, leaving the difference to other functions...) of memory, which seems ridiculous today, but at the time that is how they made it. As it became clear that this was inadequate a number of memory schemes were developed to utilize more memory. Many DOS programs have specific needs regarding the first 640k (conventional memory), and you will have to do your own research to figure that out, but "upper memory", extended memory, and expanded memory refer to memory beyond 640k. You can set this up by editing config.sys (and probably autoexec.bat as well) to load memory managers emm386.exe and himem.sys.

Sorry to carry on like that, it's rare these days that I get to use this old knowledge. One could go into much more detail, but... the DOS version with Win98 is 7.1 I believe, and I would have thought that it would be "pre-setup" for extended memeory, but the GUI has its own system, so what the hell. For all that I can't tell you exactly what to do, but if you look around a bit you should find more info on how to do this. Oh, you may also need to run MSCDEX.exe and possibly other DOS drivers get full functionality... (sound, mouse, etc. good old autoexec.bat...)

Is it possible to run it in Oracle Virtualbox? because it starts and says 'You can now safely turn off your computer. If you want to restart press CTRL+ALT+DEL'. What could be the problem?. Please guide.

What version of Oracle, I imagine new versions would work in a later version of Windows, say XP onwards.
I presume it must be a really old version?

Running Windows 98 Virtual Machine on Windows 7 Enterprise (64 bit)

    Hi All,

I have installed Windows 98 Virtual Machine on Windows 7 Enterprise (64 bit).

Please can you advise how I can share my Windows 7 drives or files with the Windows 98 Virtual Machine?

I have checked Tools -> Settings -> Integration Features. "Enable at startup" is ticked and the drives are ticked.

Tools -> Enabled Integration Features is grayed-out and cannot be selected.

I have tried Tools -> Upgrade Integration Components, and then click Continue to automatically set up Windows PC Integration Components. I can an error dialog message in the Virtual Machine sayings "The D:\SETUP.EXE file expects a newer version of Windows. Upgrade your Windows version."

Please can you advise how I can share my Windows 7 drives or files with the Windows 98 Virtual Machine?

Thank you for your time and help,
    Best regards,
    James

    Hi,
I downloaded this yesterday, got it running and managed to install Lego Mindstorms Robotics Invention System 1.0.
This was very easy, a big relief after trying and failing to understand how to use VirtualBox (I'm a physicist not a computer scientist)
However when I tried to install Mindstorms Vision Command, it failed because there is no access to USB through Virtual PC 2007.

Please please advise - would either of these options work
    a) install a USB serial or parallel converter cable (there are no serial or parallel ports in my PC, I'm hoping that Virtual PC 2007 will treat these as genuine serial /parallel ports) and THEN plug in a serial/parallel to USB converter, so Windows 98 thinks it is using a serial port for USB.
    b) install the new version of Virtual PC, maybe magically it will upgrade the Windows 98 - the new version of virtual PC does have USB support.

Or can you suggest another method ?

    Thank you

I have just tried the Windows 98 VM on the latest Windows Virtual PC for Windows 7. Sadly you need to update the VPC additions for USB support. As you have guessed the VPC additions do not work on Windows 98 in the newer version sadly.

They do work on Windows XP however:

The Lego Mindstorms Vision cam does work on Windows XP too, however its picked up as a Logitech Quickcam so i'm not sure if it would actually work with the Lego software on Windows XP

The last time i used mine was many years ago on a real Windows 98 PC.

I know VMWare can also share USB devices to the Virtual Machine, i believe it does that for Windows 98 too.

That will probably be the easiest thing to try, good luck!

I have a Gateway laptop os Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. It needs a bit more tweaking but I got 98se running on my laptop using Windows Virtual pc. I think I still have to do a few more things before I can play my old 16 and 32 bit Windows games. But 98se is running just fine. I can copy and past just fine both ways between 98se and win7
