the August 2011 edition of the Xbox 360 Mag Italy, Microsoft is supposedly gearing up to release an external Blu-ray drive for their highly successful Xbox 360 console. If proven to to factually correct, the enticing addition of a Blu-ray drive could be a direct measure to counter the PS3′s rising momentum – following the highly publicized price cut announced by Sony at Gamescom 2011. Insiders at Microsoft in the USA have told SmartHouse that Microsoft has already configured a standalone Blu-ray player that can be connected into an Xbox 360 and that subject to internal marketing and sales approvals the model could be on sale within 3 months The magazine did not elaborate on whether the rumored Xbox 360 Blu-ray drive would be utilized solely for the viewing of high definition movies, or whether the drive would usher in the availability of an increase in disc space for gaming. The Blu-ray drive will most likely be a simple add-on for the console, as the idea of segmenting the user-base is absolutely insane to say the least.
If It Was Made In An Add On, Like Such As An External Drive. It Would Be Easier To Hack Because It Would Use USB.
There would probably be nothing to hack, It would likely just work on a PC like the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive did.
if microsoft made the swtch for games to blu ray it would sure give developers hell of alot more room but also raise xbox price tag probably why there making it a usb add on
Blu-ray would never be used for games, it would massively limit the target audience for any 360 games released on Blu-ray. The 360 can manage with just a DVD drive this gen, its not hard to have games on multiple discs and i really don't see it as a problem either. To make things easy for the end user you would have optional installs with the ability to then play with just disc 1 in the console, the PS3 has mandatory installs for a fair few games anyway as the read speeds on Blu-ray are not great.
Why? That wouldn't make any sense at all, that would mean you couldn't use Kinect to navigate Blu-ray playback, plus the older model 360's don't even have a Kinect port. The HD-DVD add-on used USB and that was fine, plus the newer 360's have 5 USB ports now, why waste the 1 & only Kinect port.
I'm not saying it won't happen, but I doubt Microsoft will release a Blu-Ray player for the 360. It just doesn't make sense. Not many people (that I know anyway) buy Blu-Ray discs, and based on the price, I'm guessing it will be (about $100), most people would be turned off since you can get a stand-alone Blu-Ray player for that price. You could also shell out another $100 for a PS3, which plays games.
That literally makes no sense what so ever. There isn't even an argument possible for this as to why they'd do that. I really doubt it'll happen. Blu-Ray has been out for quite some time, it wouldn't make much sense to say "Hey who wants Blu-Ray?" Honestly I don't know very many people who use Blu-Ray (or want to) and those who do already have a Blu-Ray player or PS3.
Blu ray is not coming for the xbox 360 or xbox 720. A simple fact, Sony holds the exclusive rights for the blu ray discs and drivers. And they are paying millions of dollars to protect these rights. Anyone who is going use this technology, which is the blu ray, must pay Sony some fees as a compensation. I do not see this is happening for Microsoft, because they are not going ever pay Sony for such a device. The blu ray discs in my opinion is all about larger capacity and Microsoft has absolutely no problem in producing a game on 3 DVDs instead of one blu ray. And so does the players, like me, I do not have a problem if I am on level 22 and it says switch discs or so on. So, this is absolutely never going happen and no blu rays for Microsoft.
I think Dual layer dvd's & blu-ray will be supported . Microsoft can't just quit on dvd's , that would mean that everybody has to buy the Blu-ray ad on .
the most powerful disc to date is a holographic disc Media typeUltra-high density optical discEncodingMPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC (H.264), NGVC (H.265) and VC-1Capacity6 TBDeveloped byHSD ForumUsageData storage, High-definition video, Quad HD & the possibility of Ultra HD Im guessing it would be a possability this mite be used next gen or maybe not as there twice the price of a blu-ray and arent avalible to public yet but they do go down in price in buisness over the years
By the way seanpr92, could you please add the source of this article ?! Because there will not be a blu ray for the xbox I will wager. Please check the copy rights that Sony has for the blu ray at the moment. It will be a sort of legal dispute if Microsoft will do this. So Microsoft will never do that unless they pay Sony some fees. I doubt that such a thing to happen, Microsoft paying to Sony, because it is like Jerry the mouse surrendering to Tom the cat without any tricks.
Okay, check the attached pdf, it is like 12 pages file, which does explain the business relationship between the blu ray discs and Sony label. It is more like a direct subsidiary that Sony is committed to with few other manufactures. Reading the first two pages should be ample to provide the overall idea. The solid statement that can be found in page 4 is the proven fact. That Sony DO hold the rights for blu ray "These parts are used in a Sony owned company called Sony-NEC Optiarc which produces Blu-Ray drives. These are used by Sony itself to produce Blu-Ray players and also sold to other companies wishing to make Blu-Ray players " So, personally I do not see this coming for the xbox. Because Microsoft will never ever pay royalties to Sony for its Blu ray. And consequently declaring that they have lost the war between HD-DVD and blu ray. Microsoft will support the HD-DVD only.
I don't need to read a 12 page document. You said "exclusive" which inherently makes your previous statement false. I never said they didn't own some of the rights. I just said they don't own "exclusive" rights (meaning they don't hold majority, which they certainly do not).
We all could be wrong in someways. All humans do some mistakes once in a while. But looks like you have found some gaps to make my statement "inherently false" !! Any company who wishes to add a blu ray or produce that technology must pay Sony some royalties. Does not that sound like exclusivity ? However, with this sharp view that you have already got, you should have also noticed that I wrote the word "subsidiary". The business dictionary defines the term subsidiary as a parent company who got control over potential users, which is in our case Sony. The first one to use blu rays. Wishing that the explanation was enough.
Well, Microsoft did register the domain www. sony-microsoft.com and www. microsoft-sony.com awhile back, I still HIGHLY doubt it would be because of this but it would make sense in a way. Also you both are arguing on technicalities so you both are arguing about being right.
Two rights make their whole argument wrong? I remember when HD-DVD failed and everyone was hoping MS would release a Blu-ray player at the time to kind of compensate the consumers who put faith in their HD-DVD player (which if I remember at the time was cheaper than buying a standalone, just like the PS3 and blu-ray players back then). However now a days blu-ray players aren't that expensive so if MS did go ahead and release one I don't think they'd have much success with it unless it was relativley cheap.
