There have been SEVERAL reports that GTA V Online is corrupting save data. So you either may want to wait for a patch (which Rockstar already says they're working on) or make sure you have a backup that won't get corrupted.

Ive not risked playing it yet (more like i was too tired to) however i will certainly be making a backup of my saves. From what i've read on the internet and what friends have told me it's basically unplayable at the moment. Hopefully it will be sorted for the weekend as i planned on playing with with Nimrod and anyone else who is online.
Saves are not corrupted they just created a temporary char even says saves disabled when rs social is unreachable
No, it's literally corrupting saves among other screwy things. One of my friends had his whole game corrupt, including everything single player.
