GTA San Andreas multiplayer

Back when I were a lad, and all this were nowt but trees, SA-MP used to be the best mod by far (with the exception of race modes perhaps), however MTA SA DM has since been released. How do they shape up, and which is better now?

Was the SA-MP mod the one where you could only race?

I seem to remember it took two years or so for the GTA SA Death match to be released to the public, however there was one where you could drive about but not get out of cars before that (I think)

I played the Multi Theft Auto mod for Vice City a lot many years ago.
