Right guys, I will have to show you some of my classic monster experice to explain this one.

the wolf man (aka...the werewolf) one of the classic monsters.

used in horror films before holywood got into the trend of having the serial killers (friday 13th, haloween etc...), wierd japanese ghost film remakes (the ring and the grudge etc) and what has been dubed the "torture porn" films (I.E. the hostel) and thereore trying to convince us that the real monster is the human being (which I find both really anoying and lasy writing)

this was back in the day when horror movies meant monster movies like Dracula, the wolf man, Frankenstine, the creature from the black lagoon and the mummy. The real meat and potatoes of the horror genre. Monsters that were less likey to mess with your mind rather than eat it and use your skull as a bowl.

now alot of them have been updated and remade. The mummy being one of the most recent (the first was exelent, but the sequels just got too silly), frankenstine (though this has been done from the book not the film, but its actually scarirer) Dracula is the most popular though (and its been remade so many times its actually not funny or scarry anymore)

how ever the wolf man (werewolf) has had a harder time of it. and perhaps its because the werewolf is one of the hardest monsters to do justice to. weve had some good werewolf movies (an American werewolf in london and the howling) but there have also been alot of duds (cursed, the howling sequels) though I have to confess that dog soldiers is a guilty pleasure of mine.

for a long time the best werewolf movie has been the very first wereolf movie. The Wolf man (1941) staring lon chaney Jnr. heres a clip:

(where the hell the boiler suit came from I will never know LOL)

well they have finally got round to remaking the original wolfman film (which in a way I was dreading) and we finally have a trailer. and from the looks of it all I can say is "by jove I think they've got it". they seem to have got the mix right between modern horror techniques and homage to the old film. i.e. having there werewolf as a humanoid but still making it not look human.

sorry about the lenghth of the thread (I know its turned into somthing of an essay) but the old monster movies and horror in general is sa topic i feel rather strongly about. anyway heres the trailer for the new film. let me know what you think. enjoy:

I might end up seeing this as it does look like it's being done quite well, but film makers seem to be out of any original ideas. Resorting to remakes of films that are nearly 70 years old is definitive proof of this. I can't help but think that the horror genre has become a bit of a dry well since all the films seem to be done in the same way and you can almost always predict what's going to happen.

I see what you mean. All i am asking for is that Horror movies start making monster movies again, instead of the torture porn type movies.

films like The Cave and The Descent (its sequel comes out soon)were a breath of fresh air since they introduced new types of monster.

I beseach Hollywood writers, tone down the serial killers, get Rid of the torture porn and for gods sake leave Japan Alone. come on Lads and lasses Give us somthing new and stop remaking stuff.

(sulks off to watch Dog Soldiers and 28 days Later to calm his nerves)
