This tutorial will show you how to extract game demos from your Xbox 360 hard drive to your pc.

You are going to need some way of connecting the 360’s hard drive to your computer, although quite expensive the Datel X-Sata is an easy way to do this - the X-Sata will allow you to keep the hard drive in your 360 then connect it via USB to your computer or laptop.

You could also checkout the tutorial on how to get a free data migration kit from Microsoft, this will allow you to slot the hard drive out of your Xbox 360 and connect it to your computer.

It doesn’t matter how you connect the drive to your pc as long as you do, the rest of this tutorial will be the same from then on.

As the pc can’t read the Xbox’s XFAT file system when the drive is connected to your pc it will not show up in my computer, were going to use a program called Xplorer 360 to read the contents of the 360’s hard drive. You will need the version of Xplorer 360 that corresponds to the size of your drive.

    Xplorer 360 - 20gb Edition Download
    Xplorer 360 - 60gb Edition Download
    Xplorer 360 - 120gb Edition Download
    Xplorer 360 - 250gb Edition Download

In Xplorer 360 go to Drive > Open > Hard drive or memory card.

After a few seconds you should see three partitions appear, the partition with all the content on is partition 3, so open that and click on the content folder.

You should now see a lot of folders made up of random letters and number, each of these folders contains the content a profile on your hard drive owns, for example save games.

You should be able to see a folder called 0000000000000000

This contains all the shared content on the console, such as demos and game trailers.

Now the easiest way to find the demo your after is to look at the “Date Modified” for each folder, chances are if you just downloaded the demo it should be the top of the list.

Go through the folders until you come to a file with a random name made up of letters and numbers, this is the file you want to extract.

(Another way to help you identify the correct demo is to look at how big the demo is on the 360 then if the demo you’re looking at in Xplorer360 is around this size you probably have the right one)

To dump the demo right click, then select extract and save the demo somewhere on your computer.

You will then be asked where to save the file

The file will then dump to your pc

After the file has extracted you can open it in wxPirs and it will tell you the title and description of the extracted demo, all been well you extracted the demo you were after.

    Download wx Pirs

All you need to do now is recreate the folder structure of where you found the demo on your pc.

    For example:

    Content\0000000000000000\545187E3\00080000

You would put the game file: 0731541C733508CC90994B114C258F9B60744A6E54 you just extracted in the folder it was in on the 360, in this example that would be the 00080000 folder

Now you can burn the content folder to a DVD and play it in a 360 that doesn’t have a hard drive.

Yes I believe you can, just connect the hard drive to the computer using the transfer kit.

The first time you do it you should notice windows installing some drivers, after that follow the above guide and Xplorer 360 should pick your hard drive up.

When I download wxPirs and use WinRar to unrar it, it says it cannot open the application because an operation failed or something like that. Any ideas?

Hey Safinn I have a second data transfer cable if you would like it. When I ordered one from Microsoft for my new Xbox, they sent me two for some reason. It's what I use to connect mine.

Yes it is. One connects through the USB and the other end connects to the hard drive.

I've tried it but after my hard drive is connected via the Data Transfer Kit, Xplorer360 doesn't seem to recognize it when searching for an XFAT drive. Windows (Vista SP2 32Bit) indeed tried to install drivers and failed, and I tried with every USB port (all 2.0) my PC has. It doesn't work on my brother's PC as well (XP SP3 32Bit). Any help?

Hmmm.. I have no clue. I'm on windows Xp service pack 3 aswell and the first time i used the transfer cable, it installed in like 20 seconds and I was ready to use it and xplorer recognised it.

What size hard drive for the 360 do you have Slaz?

It should install using the generic windows drivers for sata hard drives, can you install it manually in device manager?

The hard drive has to be picked up by Windows for Xplorer 360 to work.

The size is 20GB. But I could try it with my primary 120GB one as well.

And about the drivers, it did recognize a particular SATA driver, which was already installed when plugged in. But it was looking for more driver(S) and failed thereafter telling it had a problem and can't be installed. Wait, I'll try again right now and tell if it says anything else.

Mine doesn't get recognized by windows but still works. I just half to run the program as a admin. Then once open just hit drive, open, hard drive or mem card. Also I do believe there is certain Xplorer's that work with the different size hard drives.

If you plan to use your 120. Try the one below.

if that doesn't work make sure its plugged up and running and restart you pc. Then try again.

The only way to be 100% sure is to have someone test it, only a few demos are console locked and even fewer region locked.

There is a program that tells you if content is console locked (can’t remember its name but I think KingBurn has it) but that’s honestly useless when it comes to demos.

I went to the Australian Xbox site and as of January 2010 the cables will be $19, but will come free with the 120gb Hdd.

Can use use the cable to put demos on the Hard Drive?

Yes you can use the cable, it just looks like it will no longer be free!
