Another milestone in Xbox 360 hacking has been reached, an application called freeBOOT will now allow your jtag hacked Xbox 360 to boot a patched kernel / dashboard.

Think of this like custom firmware for the PSP, in plain English this means your Xbox 360 can run the latest dashboard with most of the security checks removed.

What does this mean to you?

    • Basically you can do anything you want with your Xbox 360.
    • Your console can run anything coded with the official Xbox 360 development kit (XDK) such as the mame emulator and XBMC 360 when released without needing the application / game to be signed by Microsoft.
    • You can connect any hard drive you want to the Xbox 360 and load applications and games from it. An Xbox 360 with a 1TB hard drive? Yes please… hey its cheaper than the official 120gig!
    • The Xbox 360 can now boot games from any region on your Xbox 360 either from DVD or the hard drive.
    • Games can be patched and customized so user created maps for games such as Halo, Gears of War and Call of Duty are now possible.
    • Much more but I will keep this short and sweet...

    Video of it in action:

As you can see unsigned applications are been loaded from the latest 8955 dashboard.

I need to mod my 360. I could work wonders on some demos. Then i'd be able to swap out L4D demo maps with user created maps and that would be pretty sweet. Though does that mean that modded 360's would be able to run on XBL? I can't see the vids because of this dreadful linux.

Yes you can’t use Xbox Live with this, if you have been on Xbox Live since August the exploit will have been patched.

You need an Xbox 360 manufactured before June 18th and that has the dashboard 7371 or lower to exploit it.

Best to have one for Live and another for homebrew / system link games.

I also have another question that somewhat relates to this though is a little bit off topic.
When you flash a 360's DVD drive doesn't that make it to where it would pass the security check? Then wouldn't it be possible to patch arcade game to make them full game and put them on a disc and boot them that way to bypass the security check?

So it is possible to mod a 360 with a mod chip then even after the summer update right? As it would allow you to inject what kernel you would want on your 360. If that IS the case I might have to buy another 360 and get to modding.

When you flash a DVD drive your basically altering the way the DVD drive looks at a burned disc so the Xbox 360 still thinks its booting an original game.

You cant modify anything on burned discs as it breaks the digital signature of the disc which the 360 is still checking even on burned games.

This is the same with arcade games, when you modify arcade games a normal 360 will check them and know they have been modified so wornt let you load them, however the hacked 360 dashboard will happily let you boot a modded arcade game.

With that in mind you carnt mod a 360 game and trick the 360 in to flashing a hidden update. This hack happens as the 360 is booting which has been patched in new consoles since the middle of June and in dashboard updates for existing consoles.

People on the Xbox Scene forums say places like Wallmart and Bestbuy in the US still have the 60gb premium packs, most of these consoles are 16mb jaspers manufactured before the middle of June this year so at the moment it should be pretty easy to find an exploitable console if you wish. You do need to solder wires and resistors on to the 360 to do this hack so its a bit more complicated than a software mod.
