Major Nelson is reporting that Microsoft plans to enable Xbox 360 owners to store profiles, saves, game demos, and other Xbox files on any USB memory device starting April 6th. It will come in the form of a system update available to Xbox Live subscribers.

When you connect a USB memory unit, you can go to the memory configuration screen to configure the drive. This entails a quick one-time check to see if the drive is working properly, followed by setting the amount of memory you want to use on the drive. The capacity will be capped at 16GB, and you can have up to two devices connected at the same time, giving you a maximum of 32GB of USB memory space. The device will then be viewable in the memory management screens.

This is great news for those not willing to pony up cash for a proprietary Xbox 360 hard drive when you run out of space on the drive that shipped with your console. It also means you can now use flash memory, which will boost memory performance many times over. This will make the entire Xbox Live platform more portable than it is now, allowing easier transport of files from console to console, and opening up more opportunities for content sharing.

Microsoft will also be teaming up with SanDisk to release an Xbox 360 branded flash drive that will be released in May, not long after the update goes live.

Why does Major Nelson have 300 Gigs of hard drive space? I wish I had that much :(

This is probably part of the reason for the Memory Units being less common in gaming stores now and last year. In my area, all common game stores ran out of 256MB and 512MB units.

So, If I burn this System Update to a CD, and then I put it in my xbox 360 tray, I will be able to update my console? (I've got the E71 error).

It's a perk of being a Microsoft executive. I doubt they'll release a new hard drive size for a while since they just released the 250 GB to the public.

Could someone answer this question? I'm afraid of sending my xbox 360 and having to send it back a day later (it's the fifth time my xbox has broken, I know what I'm talking about, unfortunately).

    Thanks in advance.

Which system update are you talking about? The USB support update isn't even out yet.

Dont know to be honest, why dont you just try it when the new update is out? depends when you get the E71 error I would think.

If it does the 360 animation when turning it on but then gets the E71 when the dashboard should be loaded you might be able to flash the new update.

Have a look at my YouTube video on updating the 360, at about 2:12 you will see what happens when you power the console on with a dash update on a DVD. I presume if your console can boot that far before getting the E71 you might be able to update and fix it.

I believe the E71 is related to some corrupt files on the 360's nand, if thats damaged then flashing a new update might not do anything anyway.

Haha, I'm talking about doing it with this system update, when it comes out, april 6th.
Yup, it does show the 360 animation and then gets the error E71.

I've done quite a lot of research about this error and I'm pretty sure it's related to corrupted updates (I had the error shortly after I had updated my console).

By the way, I'm going to watch the video. Thank you both for your attention, let's see if I get my console repaired by april 6th (will the update be posted here?).
