GBAtemp report Nintendo has been so kind as to release system menu 4.2 for the Wii. This update will delete The Homebrew Channel, all cIOS files and remove bootmii from your system. It appears that all IOS files have been updated and a few new ones installed. Effectively, it will remove and all homebrew and iso loading capabilities from your console so for now we recommend not upgrading!

The update doesn't add any new functionality other than block homebrew

Playstation has always been the most 'open' platform for homebrew thanks to Linux. But then again, as support and maintenance of the console is a responsibility for the company itself, I do understand that they feel the need to oversee that their customers are only running games/data that are 'certified' by Nintendo..

Also, creators of homebrew always find a way around the possible security in these updates, so simply waiting with every system update before further information from homebrew sites is a fix already..

Well I guess I won't be upgrading anytime soon, well at least until someone fixes the Homebrew channel :P

I dont have a Wii but do you actually need to update at some point to keep playing new games?

Some games ask you to update. But 4.2 has been cracked already with bannerbomb.

Haha good to hear that! And yes, some major games developed by Nintendo that are expected to sell at reasonable numbers come with an update secretly included on the disc. This to give players without internet access the advantages/bugfixes of the later releases and, of course, to prevent players from running a pirated copy of the game at that time.

This update did a horrible job deleting homebrew. All it did was semi-brick my Wii and remove my theme. Now I can no longer access my Wii setting as it will freeze. I also can't access the Weather forecast channel as it'll freeze and can't access the Wii shop as it tells me I need the 4.2 update even though my Wii says I have 4.2. Though I can still access the Homebrew channel. That is basically the only thing I care about.

What a great update then, as you can still run homebrew I imagine you should be able to fix your wii with few problems.

As you say you still have the most important channel I would care about if I had a Wii ;)

Normally that would be true but no PC. Oh well, I'll probably pick up a cable in a few days...hopefully.

I might just try Linux on the PS3 as i'm going to purchase one on Monday, though i'll probably pick a cable up when I get my PS3. Thankfully I have Ctorrent on my PSP to get me through the day. :D

Glad to see you making good use of homebrew on the PSP :D

Remember if you want Linux on the PS3 the slim doesn’t support it!

Having homebrew on my PSP is the main reason I bought a Wii as the PSP has some excellent homebrew. Unfortunetly the Wii doesn't have the homebrew I was expecting. Though it does have a Media Center so it can read my portable hard drive as apperently its just too hard for the 360 (Damn HFS+ format). Though after about 30 minutes my Wii does recognize my hard drive and I have to plug it back in. I can play a 2 hour movie and it'll play the whole movie but if I stop it, it won't boot back up.

I definitely didn't forget that slims can't boot Linux. That would definitely suck if I forgot.
Typing this message on Wii sucks.

I feel for you Dark Scyth. I remember in 2005 when my PC gave up on me and I had to browse the internet through my soft modded Xbox. If InsaneNutter hadn't showed me how I'd have probably gone mad. It's only when you don't have the proper tools to browse the internet that you realise how dependant you are on it sometimes.
