George Hotz (Geohot) who is well known for hacking the iPhone is now having a go at the PS3.

On his blog he has posted:

I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1. I've also dumped the NAND without removing it or a modchip.

3 years, 2 months, 11 days...thats a pretty secure system

Took 5 weeks, 3 in Boston, 2 here, very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software.

It will be interesting to see what happens next.

Just goes to show, there is no un-hackable console. I could only imagine having a CFW on my PS3, so many emulators and homebrew and then you'd probably also be able to play PS3 games via hard drive too, that would be nice.

This is interesting... GeoHot is also the marker on my jailbreak on my iPhone. Blackra1n.

I'm sure soon we'll all be going out and purchasing a PS3 if we don't already own one.

Except Nimrod :P I remember him saying he was thinking of buying one too, as was I. Then I went back to my 360, put homebrew on my Wii and somehow the thought never came up again.

any of u lot think that him hackin this maybe highly unlikely.... or is it just me.

On the PlayStation 3: I know some function names...

He has progressed more than anyone else has, so progress is progress.
This is the first steps towards a hacked PS3, but as to having custom firmware or anything usable anytime soon i wouldn't hold your breath.

Remember it has taken over 3 years from the first Xbox 360 hack to get to the point where we have custom dashboards / firmware and unsigned XDK applications.

yh prob fake. hes deffinately real!! :D

Speaking to the BBC, Geohot has revealed that his PS3 hack is around 95 percent software based and 5 percent hardware based. Moreover, he said his hack could be used for a variety of things including homebrew, PS2 games and piracy (of which the latter not supporting). Mr Hotz said that he had begun the hack last summer when he had spent three weeks analysing the hardware.
After a long break, he spent a further two weeks cracking the console, which he described as a "very secure system".

He said that he was not yet ready to reveal the full details of the hack but said that it was "5% hardware and 95% software".

Sounds pretty promising, if he says the hack is real i'm inclined to believe him. From reading the Wikipedia article about him it sounds like he's a bit of a genius.

Will be very interested to hear how he has done it.

He has released his hack: On the PlayStation 3: Here's your silver platter

In the interest of openness, I've decided to release the exploit. Hopefully, this will ignite the PS3 scene, and you will organize and figure out how to use this to do practical things, like the iPhone when jailbreaks were first released. I have a life to get back to and can't keep working on this all day and night.

Please document your findings on the psDevWiki. They have been a great resource so far, and with the power this exploit gives, opens tons of new stuff to document. I'd like to see the missing HV calls filled in, nice memory maps, the boot chain better documented, and progress on a 3D GPU driver. And of course, the search for a software exploit.

This is the coveted PS3 exploit, gives full memory access and therefore ring 0 access from OtherOS. Enjoy your hypervisor dumps. This is known to work with version 2.4.2 only, but I imagine it works on all current versions. Maybe later I'll write up how it works :)

Good luck!

I imagine there will be a massive eruption on PS3 news in the next month, just wish I was more knowledgeable on this, I wouldn't mind trying some things.
