Today Microsoft officially unveiled the final name for Project Natal, Dubbed Kinect for Xbox 360, the controller-free game device is set to go on sale later this year.

The technology behind Kinect is fairly simple, a TV-mounted camera/microphone bar to sense motion, sound and movement. What's new and ground breaking is the tracking of 3D movement as well as 2D movement. The system is also able to scan users faces and sign them into Xbox live, as well as react to vocal tone and pitch, and process this data in real-time.

Microsoft is set to announce pricing and release dates at an E3 press briefing later today.

Here are some of the games/apps that will make use of Kinect:

    • Kinectimals lets you train and play with 20 different virtual cats, including a lion, cheetah and tiger.
    • Joyride, a racing game, lets players use their hands to hold an imaginary steering wheel — pull your hands toward you and push back out for an acceleration boost — and their bodies to execute jumps and tricks.
    • Kinect Sports has six activities including boxing, bowling, beach volleyball, track and field, soccer and table tennis. To serve a volleyball, you mimic the real motion; in soccer, you can kick the ball or do a header.
    • Kinect Adventures includes a river-raft time trial and obstacle course, playable by up to four players. On the raft, playing as a duo, you and a partner must lean one way or another to steer. Jumping helps the raft reach special areas for extra points.
    • Dance Central, in development by MTV Games, brings a So You Think You Can Dance experience home.
    • Star Wars characters and iconic Disney favorites will be featured in separate new games being developed at Microsoft in conjunction with LucasArts and Disney.
    • Video Chat for the Xbox 360 has also been confirmed, and it will use the Kinect camera.

Yes, but if you want one of your articles to be possibly put on the Front Page News, let one of the Mods or Admins know, and it will be looked at and moved if deemed appropriate.

Now to business, I don't really know about this 360 slim rumor. It seems like they are putting all of their resources into making Project Natal a great success, and I think an announcement of a slim console would not be in their best interest. I personally don't mind the size of the 360 the way it is. I don't quite understand why, but I am just really opposed to the idea of a slim 360. I think it's unnecessary, so I'm hoping that they will just be talking about Natal and upcoming games at E3 and not reveal this new console.

I'm even more reassured now that the Slim rumor is true now that Kinect is official. I'll try to keep the OP updated as more info is released. The OP is sloppy I know, it's 2 in the morning and I don't fare well while tired, so I'll fix it up in the morning ;D

I was just wondering. So far this is only a rumor, the slim part anyway since Kinect was officiated just a few hours ago, so it doesn't deserve the headlines yet.

That explains what happened to Joyride anyway, I was quite looking forward to that game.
Hopefully you will be able to play with without Kinect as I have no plans to buy that anytime soon, if ever.

Done ;) I was going to front page this anyway so enjoy, feel free to add to it.

Well thank you my nutty friend. :D
I don't blame you. The price tag ranges from $60 to $200, and that's a lot to spend on a camera.

Edit : One thing I just noticed is that Video Chat has been confirmed to be coming to Xbox 360 to be used with Kinect. Who else sees a problem with Video Chat over the internet? xD

I must say that the new Xbox 360 looks quite good. I'm a little frustrated because I WANT it, but don't NEED it. I've got the MW2 limited edition console with my wifi adapter and the 250gb hard drive. But the new 360 looks so nice and shiny...I want it.
