Before Smart Switch, this was how you looked after a Samsung phone from a PC. Kies is Samsung's desktop suite for older Galaxy and Samsung phones and tablets: it backs up and restores the phone, syncs contacts, calendar and music, moves files across and installs firmware updates. Kies 2.6 is the version to use with the older models, and Samsung's newer phones have moved on to Smart Switch or Kies 3.

Unzip it and run KiesSetup.exe. Then connect the phone by USB cable and let Kies detect it.
Tip: take a backup first and keep the phone charged before you try a firmware update. A cable pulled out mid-update is the classic way to end up with a phone that won't boot.
