Is there room for a fourth games console? A question that is often asked and one which is usually met with objections based on development time, cost and user base but what if someone snook in through the back door so to speak, would anyone see them and would it be such a suprise to those that have been watching carefully.

The reason for the initial question is that next week Apple will hold an event in San Francisco to unveil its much rumoured iSlate device to a waiting and wanting press gathering but for the first time some of the more renowned gaming press have also been invited to the event in what is a first for Apple. Now this may only be something which Apple feels is necessary due to the success of its iPhone and the growing user base of gamers or it could be that the new iSlate has something else to offer that may just appeal to gamers looking for something a little different than the current generation of consoles. It has been thought for many months by Apple purists that any new touch device would run a similar O.S. as the iPhone but with more horsepower available to a new handheld machine then true gaming that we know at the moment could become more of a reality for Apple.

Also confirmed by this Fox News report is that the event will also debut the new Apple O.S. 4 for iPhone, whether this will be a demo or if it will be released after the event remains to be seen and if the rumours are true then we could see true multitasking with background apps and more of a palm computer OS coming to iPhones, something which other mobile operators have achieved but Apple dodged due to battery life issues.

I have been waiting for Apple to input themselves into the gaming console market. After seeing the success of games on the iPhone, it makes sense that they want to have one device solely dedicated to gaming. I wouldn't be surprised if we see an announcement about a bigger console that can compete with the likes of the Wii, 360, and PS3. It would be a smart move for Apple to do so; we'll see what this conference will hold.

You actually think that Apple has chance in this market? I mean Sony and Microsoft have soo many exclusives in there grasp not many atrractions there for a console from apple. Plus the ARC(eye toy) and Natal coming out i'd doubt that Apple would stand a chance in this market... althought i may be worng since they have brought out quiete some wonders like the iphone. *-)

It would be hard for them to begin with I think, but there are so many Apple fans out there that buy anything the company puts out. I think that if Apple has the right hardware and uses the right technology, they could give Sony and MS a run for their money. It won't be an easy road if that is the one that Apple decides to take.

Honestly I don't think it'll stand a chance but I sorta thought the same thing about the first xbox as it was a new console and look what its achieved.

I wonder if Dell will get annoyed with them already having the Dell Slate name in an upcoming product.

As much as i like apple i have a gut feeling the iSlate will be $1000+

What market is it aimed at? from what i hear its basically iPod touch with a big screen, same os and so on...
