The problem you have is the avatars need to be installed with the update, as you have already updated the only way you can get the avatars is by going on Xbox Live and downloading them. Can you not put your hard drive in a friends console and get then like that?
The last update we have with the avatars at the moment is 7371 which is from June 2009.

ah, im gonna have to wait till christmas then....
I'm at uni atm which is about 530 miles away from my home and the only network available is the uni one which is preventing me from updating.
Is there not a way to intercept the file as the xbox tries to download it? Im quite new to this and i don't have much clue how you get the files.

Unfortunetly you can't intercept the file. I'm assuming your either using slow internet, using someone elses internet or both. If your using someone elses internet try to get the update when other people aren't using it, very late or early morning. The way the updates are posted on digiex is by extracting it from the 360's HDD and uploading it to the site.

What about if you share the internet from your pc to the xbox 360, can you get on live then?
im using ICS to connect the xbox to the internet. Im on a resnet network which is tempermemntal at best.
The problem is that the IT department as blocked specific ports due to security reasons and them covering their own arses from copyright infringement due to studants using torrents etc.
To be honest, i have no idea if xbl will work even after its fully updated. All i know is that my console keeps trying to be updated and the clock on the dashboard corrects itself.

If you don’t have Xbox Live there are no real new features that can be used offline anyway, the only thing I can think of is game installs will be a bit smaller. The new stuff coming in the next update all needs Xbox Live too.
Just wait until the update is bundled with games if you want the latest update with avatars, for consoles that don’t go on live you don’t need the latest minor dash update... the only people I can think of that will have problems are those who flashed there console with really old firmware and haven’t upgraded it.
I know KingBurn has tried to extract the avatars with the update off some Xbox 360 games but had no luck.
never mind then...
on a side note, forza 2 requires the avatars for some reason... so i can't play that anymore. Hopefully forza 3 won't pick me up on that fact...

One last idea, got a mobile phone with some sort of mobile data plan? If so share the internet from your mobile to the 360 with ICS and it should download the updated dash no problems.
