If your board hosts files people upload, sooner or later you need a proper way to take DMCA notices. XenForo's contact form doesn't really work for it. It can be turned off for guests, members skip the captcha, and the spam checker tends to reject anything that's mostly a list of links, which is exactly what a takedown notice is.

So we made a simple form for it. Anyone can use it, guest or member, it always shows the captcha, emails the notice to whoever you set, and doesn't store anything on the forum unless the email fails. It's the one we use at https://digiex.net/misc/dmca if you want to see it before installing.

Free, change it however you like.

WHAT IT DOES

Adds a form at /misc/dmca and a "DMCA Notice" link in the footer, next to Help. The form asks for:

  • the name of the work
  • links to the infringing content, one per line
  • the copyright owner
  • the name and email of the person filing it
  • any other remarks (optional)
  • two boxes they have to tick: that they own the work or act for the owner, and that they understand the penalty for a false claim

Each notice is emailed to the address you set, with the work's name in the subject. Reply-To is the person who filed it, so you can just hit reply. If they were logged in, their username is added to the email too, but they still have to type a name and email, as the person filing isn't always the account holder.

Nothing is saved to the database while your email is working. The notice only exists as the email. If the email can't be sent, the whole notice goes into the server error log instead, so it isn't lost (see the changelog below).

Captcha is always on and XenForo's flood check applies. The spam checker is skipped on purpose, for the reason above. The links are sent exactly as typed.

INSTALL

XenForo 2.3 only, PHP 8.0 or newer.

Admin CP -> Add-ons -> Install/upgrade from archive, and upload the zip. Or copy the upload folder into your XenForo root and install it from the add-ons list, or from the command line:

php cmd.php xf:addon-install Digiex/Dmca

Then go to Admin CP -> Options -> DMCA takedown form and set the two options:

  • Send takedown notices to - empty until you fill it in, and the form is no use until you do. Use commas, semicolons or new lines for more than one address.
  • Introductory text - the text above the form. The default says "Please use the form below to contact the DMCA Takedown Agent for X.", so swap X for your forum name or paste in your own wording. It's HTML.

After that, send yourself a test notice and check it arrives, and that replying goes to the address you typed in.

WORTH KNOWING

The footer link is added to XenForo's default footer. If your style has changed that footer the link might not show, but the form still works at /misc/dmca.

It's just a form. It doesn't register a DMCA agent for you, keep a list of notices, or decide whether a notice is valid.

Uninstalling removes everything it added. There are no tables to leave behind.

CHANGELOG

1.1.0
  • A notice that can't be emailed is no longer lost. The whole notice (the work, the owner, every link, who filed it, their IP and any remarks) is written to Admin CP -> Logs -> Server error log, along with the reason it wasn't sent.
  • That covers an SMTP failure, an error while sending, and a forum with email switched off in config.php.
  • When that happens the person filing is told their request was "received" instead of "sent", so the form never says a notice went out when it didn't.
  • To upgrade, use Install/upgrade from archive with the new zip. Your options are kept.

1.0.0
  • First release.

There's more detail in the README.md inside the zip. Questions or improvements, post them here.
