I use Unity3D, a free (unless you earn too much money with it) game engine.
First, I'd like to say that, although I AM an amateur, I am not completely incompetent. This thread is not about an unrealistic teenager's dream of making the best game ever. Even if I may not be able to complete this project, I will definitely be able to make something playable, and hopefully enjoyable. I have all the time I want anyways, that's the beauty of not working in some big company
English is not my first language BTW.
I started working on some kind of hybrid of Adure Dreams and Dark Cloud. More precisely, It will be a turn based Rogue-like with town-building (and possibly inhabitant-recruiting) and pets raising (think pokemon - ish, but more tactical of course).
Here is a summary of what I plan to do :
I hope I'll have made a playable beta by the end of this summer. I have just started actually coding it (I have already made some random map generators...), so I can't post pictures yet. For now, all I have is a little guy made of spheres and cubes who walks around on a map and faces the direction you want.
I am interested in criticism and suggestions, or even 3D models etc, but especially about a story. That's the part that worries me the most.
Any idea ? I don't need anything too complicated, actually the setting would probably be more important.
It has to allow unrealistic abilities and hure monsters, basically.
The obvious choice woild be heroic-fantasy, with dragons and imps etc, but it's not very original... On the ther hand, I would not need an explanation for everything the hero , the pets or the enemies could be able to do, it'd just be "magic".
I have also thought of a pre-historic setting, but I don't like the idea that much : not enough possibilities for dungeon traps and puzzles, and only "unrealsitic" equipment customisation makes sense (what would make you able to counterattack more often when you wear that loincloth ? What could make you invisible ?). And what would be the boss battles ? They can't all be mammoths !
I don't really like Modern/post-apocalyptic/Cyberpunk, but I have to admit it would suit my needs : not having to think wether some ability or trap etc is unrealistic (replace "magic" with "science"), and opens possibilities for "weird" items (speed boosts, see-through-walls,etc) that would not be OK in another "realistic" setting, and a huge variety of mutants and/or robots.
Of course, there's always the possibility of "wacky" settings.. Think of Pikmin.
Maybe one of you already has the world I need in his demented brain, ready to be exploited by me

Here is a summary of what I plan to do :
- There will be several dungeons of varying difficulty, and different types of maps.
- the dungeons will be randomized every time you enter or exit them.
- Your level will always be reset to 1 when you enter/exit a dungeon
- Same for your pets(unlike Azure Dreams).
- You will sometime find non-agressive NPCs inside the dungeons who will give you side-quests. Some simple puzzles too.
- Some equipment customisation. Equipment will have to be repaired, only in town or with repairing items found in the dungeons;
- Limited number of items/pets you can bring in a dungeon (will probably vary);
- Pets will be found in dungeons or obtained as side-quest rewards. Some will leave when you exit the dungeon .Maybe there will be a "happiness-meter" for some pets);
- No perma-death, it's too easy to copy your saved game to cheat it anyways.
- When you die in a dungeon, you will "respawn" in town and lose everything you had brought to the dungeon, and you town may be damaged. Autosaved ?
- Town building similar to Dark Cloud 2, you will have to find materials in dungeons.
- Limited inventory space.
- Limited ability to backtrack in a dungeon, there will be one-way-paths and, sometimes, timers.
- Improving the town will be required to advance the game, and will also improve your character (allow you to improve your equipment, store more pets in your stables, positive statuses etc).
- Ability to give direct orders to your pets through a menu
- A "hard mode" with "real time" dungeon crawling, same gameplay but real-time.
