The original Jazz Jackrabbit got three shareware versions of the game, the first episode as well as two christmas themed episodes, called Holiday Hare 94 and Holiday Hare 95. Jazz Jackrabbit 2 continued this tradition, by releasing Holiday Hare 98 in the US.
Though the Holiday Hare episodes for the first game were released as free shareware copies of the game, this version was sold in stores in the US, even though it did function as a shareware version in a way. The game still contains an Order Info section in the menu to order the full game and selecting one of the episodes from the full version in the episode select screen gives the message "Only in the full version", hinting people to go buy the full version of the game. Holiday Hare 98 comes in a jewel case with Jazz and Spaz on the cover on a red background riding a sleigh. The front cover of the case can be opened and contains some general info on how to install and play the game.
This version of the game includes two episodes, the shareware episode as well as the Holiday Hare 98 episode. This new episode contains three new levels with three new christmas themed tilesets, new music and new variations of the turtle and lizard enemies wearing christmas hats. The front of the jewel case mentions this version of the game comes with 5 new levels and 10 levels total. Three of these five new levels are the single player levels, the other two are two new christmas themed battle levels that are also included. The other levels mentioned are part of the shareware release, being the three single player shareware levels as well as two CTF and one treasure hunt levels. If you were counting along, this all adds up to 11 levels total, which means the count on the front of the case is wrong.
Multiple language files were included with this release, even though it was a US release only. While selecting a different language does change the menu and shareware episode texts, the Holiday Hare 98 text boxes still appear in English only.
