Online file-sharing service Megaupload has been shut down and its executives have been indicted by Federal prosecutors, according to the Associated Press . The indictment reportedly acuses the company of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content.

As reported yesterday, hip-hop producer Swizz Beatz is currently listed as CEO of Megaupload. The company was already in a legal scrap with Universal Music Group following the inclusion of the label’s artists, including Kanye West, will.i.am, and Diddy, in a promotional video for the website.
Swizz Beatz has found himself in a legal fight with Universal Music Group thanks to a video he helped make promoting the file sharing and storage website Megaupload.

Beatz, who is the CEO of the online company, recruited his buddies Kanye West, Diddy and Will.i.am to appear in the video, which went viral late last year. Those artists are signed to Universal, and the record label was none-too-pleased to have them affiliated with Megaupload, which is widely known to host illegal copies of recorded albums.

After suing Beatz and Megaupload to take down the video, UMG has since been counter-sued by the music mogul, who insists he did nothing wrong, according to MTV News.

Filesharing sites are being paranoid now ever since megaupload was closed. This message appears if you try to download a file
All sharing functionality on FileSonic is now disabled. Our service can only be used to upload and retrieve files that you have uploaded personally.

If this file belongs to you, please login to download it directly from your file manager.

If they actively remove pirated content and do not encourage it then i see no problem.

Most of these file sharing website as only in business because of piracy i imagine.

Anyone know if File Sonic is still restricting downloads? Plus, you have to wonder if prosecutors are going to use the data basis that the seize and go after the common user and not just the companies. Just food for thought for all registered users of megauploads.

Megaupload’s Kim Dotcom Gets $750,000 Back

Just a little update on the megaupload progress.

Kim Dotcom booked a valuable victory this week when a court ruled that $750,000 in funds and cars should be returned to the Megaupload founder. Among other things, Dotcom regained possession of a $301,000 bank account and his Mercedes-Benz G55AMG. Other property that was seized based on an order from the US District Court remains in the hands of the New Zealand authorities for the time being.
