Not every PC has Word, and not every document waits until you reach one that does. Word Viewer 2003 opens, reads and prints Word documents (.doc, .rtf and .htm) for free. This is the build with Service Pack 3 already included, so there's no separate update to chase.
Download:
Download Word Viewer 2003 SP3
It reads and prints but won't edit, which with some documents is a feature. To open .docx files you'll also need Microsoft's Office Compatibility Pack, which is a separate download.
Update: Microsoft retired the Office viewers in November 2017 and no longer offers them.
