All these apps need an xbl connection, right? Doesn't that make them kinda useless?
 
Yup that is true the apps do, however a fair few of the apps can be used in other regions, even if the app cant be downloaded in that region.

Some of them will allow you to view region restricted video on demand content too, even if you are not in that region.
