Using HDDHackr with USB

So I was reading through Insane Nutter's post about how to hack a WD drive, but my problem is that I do not have an easily accessible SATA port to use (I have 2 laptops...). So my question is, can I use a SATA to USB adapter or just put the drive in an enclosure that includes SATA to USB and still make the process work?
