What I am attempting to do is use my routers smb server to serve games via lan instead of having tbe drive physically at the machine. I know you can host from a computer but the router usb connection would be alot more convenient due that the computer isnt on or my son closed some critical programs. Any information would be great. Thanks

Have a look at this guide here: Stream Xbox 360 games over a network (SMB) to an Jtag / RGH Xbox 360

Obviously instead of creating a network share on your PC, do so on the router than enter the relevant details in to FreeStyle Dashboard. I can tell you now however you will have a far better experience just connecting the usb hard drive to the Xbox 360.
