You need to run the program with administrator rights. Have you done that?

Open diskmgmt.msc (you can search for it in the start menu) see if the hard drive is seen in there. If so you might be able to assign it a drive letter (by right clicking on the drive in there) so it will appear with the other hard drives on your computer.

Thanks so much for the reply! I tried disk managment and it was showing as unallocated :( the only option was to set new partition. I am currently running a partition recovery check but it's a 3TB drive so taking AGES!!! Any other advice if this fails?

I'm not sure what else you can try if that doesn't work unfortunately.

I wanted to upgrade from a 1tb external to a 2tb external on the xbox one. The 1tb was full with 55 games and I didn't want to have to download them all again, and or transfer them thru using the Xbox. I then saw your program xbox one external usb storage device converter. It looked way easier than using linux and command prompts. I took the new 2tb drive and plugged it into the xbox and let it format it. I then plugged both the 1tb and 2tb into my computer and used the program to convert them into PC mode. It worked and I was able to copy over about 900gb of files to new 2tb drive. I did not copy the system info file, just the weird xbox files. This is where it gets strange. When I plugged the new 2tb into the xbox, it recognized only 10 games out of the 55. I plugged the old 1tb back in to check and it worked just fine showing 55 games. I then plugged the 2tb back in, and it recognized 22 games on the 2nd go around. I then unplugged and plugged it back in, each time it would recognize a few more games, but it topped out at 40. Strange. Even though its not the full 55 games, the program worked great and 40 is better than none. I'm sure it had something to do with user error. Thanks for the program.

Just so your aware you can move the games from one hard drive to another on the Xbox One it's self. Go in to the list of all the games on your console and press "start" on the game you wish to move, you then get some option to manage the game / files / data, here you can move the game to a new external hard drive.

I'm at home so can't tell you exactly what the options say, however that's basically how you can move files to a different hard drive on the Xbox One.

Also afraid this broke the usb drive completely , ran as administrator and switched to pc mode, after reconnect to pc i get blue screen of death , so i basically just made a usb operating system killer , any pc the drive is plugged into will not boot windows even if you plug in after os is loaded you get immediate blue screen and reboot to blue screen until you unplug it.

Try loading GParted, then connecting the drive and formatting it. It's very unlikely it will have totally ruined the drive, it simply needs formatting.

Will this work for internal storage?
My Xbox One(500GB) recently got struck by lightning and it blew out out the motherboard. I took the Xbox apart and plugged the HDD into my PC and transferred the User Content over to my PC. Since then I bought another 500 GB Xbox One and swapped out HDDs, but MS decides to be sneaky about this all. I did research into HDD cloning/upgrading, but I do not have the ability to clone since I don't have all the sata to USB to power two HDDs. So can I use this application to transfer my User Content, Plug my new HDD into my PC and copy the User Content to there like that, or do I have to stick with cloning (even though I'm not upgrading storage).

User content such as saves is synced to the cloud.

If you managed to extract the installed games from one external hard drive i'd imagine you will be able to copy them back. It might be safer to just copy them to an external usb drive then you can copy them back to the internal hard drive if desired on the Xbox One its self. That way you don't have to open your new Xbox One and void the warranty.

Hey insane nutter first off thanks for creating a cool alternative for everyone.

Sadly I am one of the unlucky ones and I am looking for some guidance.

I also have the blue screen of death issue. Like one of the more recent posts lists. As soon as I turned onto pc mode, I unplugged. I forgot to rescan after switching to pc mode grom xbox and I am wondering if maybe that left the hdd in a limbo? Cuz as soon as i plugged back in it was blue screen once recognized. System won't boot if connected etc.

Now I did download gparted and booted from a USB, as you suggested for someone above. Get error "back up gpt table is corrupt, but primary appears OK so that will be used."

It shows it as ntfs with error. 1.8 tb space 1.8tb used and 2.96 gb free. So info is still there.

Ran check and fix file system. It found data listed as 1 ntfs 13Mib/ 2 ntfs 13Mib/ 3 ntfs 11MiB/ 4 ntfs 0 Mib. It failed to create read only views. Can't be mounted or inconsistencies /errors in file system.

Couldn't fix anything or do anything than view that list. It took 3 days to run that check.

So am currently running the recover data to see if that gives me any options to make it use able and retain the info on the hdd. Should be done withing next 24 hrs as has been running for about 40.

Any advice? Is there a format that keeps the info and makes it accessible? I am not the most technical but can get by with some guidance.

    Thanks for any suggestions

    Brett

The tool was created by @angerwound I just posted a mini guide / mirror for it.

I know someone who did get a BOSD when connecting it to a PC managed to connect it to a different PC fine and switch the drive back to Xbox Mode fine after that.

I just tried to use this nifty little app but had no success thus far. I'm on Wind 10 x64, using an official Seagate 1TB xbox ext drive. When I plugged it into my PC, nothing happened. It doesn't appear under Computer Management or Device Manager, yet works fine on the console. I did run the app with Admin rights and even tried comparability mode for win 7. Yet I still come up with no drives detected anywhere. Do you know if there has been some change that prevents the drive from being detected on a PC now? Before this I had never even tried to connect that drive to a PC, it went straight to the X1 out of the box.

Some people seem to suggest it still works, I can't seem to get it to work myself anymore. The drive should appear under device manager though regardless.

Interestingly enough, I came across a msg in the xb1 console settings stating that if the drive was formatted as the game install location it will no longer work on a PC. Perhaps that is old news? New to me though. I agree that it should at least populate in the Computer Management application of the PC, at least as an unrecognized drive or non-formatted/allocated disk drive. I'm thinking they may have made recent changes to how the console formats and reads the MBR since it does populate as you mentioned when its formatted on the PC 1st so it shows up as a USB Media drive where you can store game clips/pictures only. Most likely a change to prevent people from looking at the game directories and trying to extract game contents via PC's. Hope we can get this to work though.

The drive's never worked on a PC when configured for Xbox game storage. I think it now says that as you can plug USB hard drives in the Xbox One and play video files off them.

The Xbox One now lets you copy games from one USB drive to another, so theirs really nothing extra you can do that's useful with a PC at this point. The only thing I liked to do was backup betas of games, in case it's possible to hack them and mess about with in the future once the Xbox One is hacked.
