2D image made into 3D

I have made an image in photoshop which is obviously 2D. Now I just want to make it 3D and add some depth. All I want is for it so stretch in the Z direction to give it depth but not as an image but as a 3D model if you know what i mean. How could I go about doing this. Varying the depth of each layer would be nice also.

Anyone have a clue?
