Battletoads...?

What in the world is up with Battletoads? Can someone explain the significance of them? I know it's a game, but is it rare or something? 4Chan always seems to call Pawn Stars regarding Battletoads.

I had the game years ago for the SNES, and I think my Sega Genesis. Arguably one of the best games ever released, but also one one that I could never beat.
